You would have become honorary member of "Neil Brennen Chess History
University".

Goran Tomic

Baloney. Reshevsky would have become World Champion. Your so pro
Botvinnik it is a shame. Lilienthal beat him fair and square and they
still chose Botvinnik.

I would certainly support a chess history newsgroup, and there seems no
shortage of interest in this subject.

Best wishes,

John Townsend

Although I think it is amusing that someone who posts rants about politics

on a chess
newsgroup would denounce a chess history posting as off-topic, there is so

much
dross at present that I would certainly welcome a chess history newsgroup.

Is
there sufficient interest out there, or is it too specialized?

There is no need for a specialist group. Chess history postings are
clearly on-topic here (there is no more specific group) and they can
hardly be said to be overrunning this group. Precedent from most of
the rest of rgc.* suggests that most posts to a new rgc.history would
mainly be cross-posted here anyway and that half of the remainder would
go there and half here. Anyone interested in chess history would have
to subscribe to both groups and that, in itself, is a good enough
reason not to split.

Who appointed you guardian of our interests? What you mean is that it's
not interesting to you. It's clearly on topic (this is a .misc group and
there is no more specific group) so, if you don't want to read it, kill-
file it.

From the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary:

HISTORIAN, n.: A writer of history, esp[ecially] a critical analyst, as
opp[osed] to a chronicler or compiler; a person learned in history; a
student of history.

No mention of academic appointmets whatsoever.

Dear Mr. Tomic,

Heil Dubya!

You were wrong to object to Campbell's "advertisement" or to Brennen's article.
On the whole, your postings are pertinent and not unreasonable, even when I
disagree with them. However, you appear determined to dig yourself a hole to
the opposite side of the earth in this matter. If you don't want to read posts
concerning chess history -- or chess history in which you are not interested --
don't read them. That's your loass and yhour loss alone. But don't attempt
to interfere with the legitimate labors and interests of other rgcm
participants.

I practically NEVER buy a book on chess theory -- unless you call tournament
and match books books "on chess history". So call me, "Pisher!" But all valid
manifestations of human culture develop a history; today, in Europe (including
the United States), a written history. Instead of discouraging Neil Brennen,
we should be encouraging him by thanking him for his labors. As a pro-human,
you should be applauding most enthusiastically. Think on it.

Dear Jerome,
I don't read your mail because nonsense howling at the end of each your
mail. If you would like to discuss you have to kick off your mail all
uncivilized sentences, war's shouts and similar nonsense....They are not
funny at all.

Mr. Tomic,

Since there are no degree programs in chess history, NO chess
historian has his title granted to him by a university. I was
appointed Historian for the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation in
2000. In addition, I have been described as a chess historian by Dr.
John Hilbert, IM John Donaldson, Dr. Vlastimil Fiala, Olimpiu Urcan,
J. Franklin Campbell, John Knudsen, and other historians and writers.
As for Mr. Spinrad, he can speak for himself, but I find his articles
interesting, and if he described himself as a chess historian I would
agree.

I think I've fed the troll enough for now.

Mr. Brennen,
thanks for the explanation.

I'm in good relation with some of the writers you mentioned, and I believe
them. I didn't want to insult you in any way, but in my country (Yugoslavia
or Serbia and Montenegro), and in Russia too, there is Chess Department on
University (DIF University).

Regarding Mr. Spinrad, I enjoy to read his articles, too. He likes to write
the texts about chess history, and I would like to see his qualifications
for it. Several months ago he enmeshed in explanation about Morphy's
family...

Goran, it would be of even greater interest if we could persude a gentleman,
a descendent of Paul Morphy, who once wrote here, and there followed private
correspondance, to share anecdotes of his family.

But to your other text, can you please tell us something of the activities
of the chess department at DIF?

Cordially, Phil Innes

Goran Tomic
