"El Duderino" wrote in message m... I know people who have seen Derren live and he really can do that stuff. I saw him live on Sunday, and I am more convinced than ever that he does very traditional magic tricks, and dresses his act up with "psychology". I was still very impressed. He is a very entertaining performer. The memory trick part was impressive on its own but comeon, the numbers on that note was a stunning finish. Tell me... if it was sleight of hand, he would have had to write out a new concertina'd note during the course of the games. Or an assistant wrote the note? And if you're accusing the players of being "in" on it then well that's something you'll have to take up with them. Derren is the real deal, believe it. What is the real deal, though? Really psychic? He certainly doesn't claim to be! |

Tell me... if it was sleight of hand, he would have had to write out a new concertina'd note during the course of the games. Watch the trick again : 1. He writes the number on the board from memory. 2. [Off stage an assistant copies it down while] he explains the significance of the numbers. 3. The Grandmaster (Melle Mel ?) takes the envelope out of his pocket and DB makes a big deal about not touching it. 4. Melle opens the envelope to reveal the concertina. 5. DB says 'let me get rid' of that and takes the empty envelope. 6. *Slightly* off camera, DB hands the envelope to his off-stage assistant [who passes back a freshly written concertina]. 7. DB *for a split second* helps Melle straighten and then open the concertina. [During this he swaps over the two papers]. 8. [The original paper is palmed into a pocket as] everyone is looking at the new one. This also explains why he got the first number wrong as this was already written on the front of the original paper and would have been seen as the envelope was opened. As someone who would be unable to do step 1, I still find DB fascinating. Edward. Bham Uni. |

I think he just does some conjuring tricks and passes them off as mind control. Just like Uri Geller Passes his conjuring off as psychic power. Also I repeat I know for sure that those chess players were not fooled by this old trick , it was all in the editing of their reactions or that they went along with it for the appearance fee. I am sure most of the other effects are like that too. As for the fact that he does it on stage - well so did Doris Stokes for years make a pretty effective illusion of being a medium and that was just based on a team of helpers. |

Well.. you never know. Sure he *says* he isnt psychic but maybe the
FEDS have leant on him to keep quiet about his devastating psi-ability. :-p But seriously, you can never be sure. Uri Geller is supposed to have effected lab equipment under scientific conditions (forgive lack of link)... |

I watched it over and over on slow-speed video and couldn't figure out how the concertina could be switched when the first number had already been seen, but I forgot that the first number was wrong! I'm inclined to think that some of the stuff he does is genuine - like in an early show when he made someone on the tube forget where he was getting off. But he mixes in a lot of conjuring tricks and makes you think he does everything the same way. Most of the examples in this thread look like conjuring tricks to me. -- Edd |
