Lev Khariton: Kramnik on Kasparov
May 11th, 2004 During a simultaneous exhibition in the city of Bonn, where Kramnik was playing 20 opponents, amongst them members of the German women's team, Neues Deutschland journalist Rene Graller spoke to 28-year-old Kramnik about the political situation in chess. Here is a summary of the interview, which appeared in the Eastern German newspaper Neues Deutschland. Below are some of Kramnik▓s remarks and my comments. On Garry Kasparov: "He is an exceptional chess player √ but he is no longer world champion. Chess is a sport and has objectively measurable results. When you win you are the winner. When you don't win you may be an excellent player √ but you just haven't won. My comment: Kramnik is absolutely right. Kasparov is no longer world champion. Vladimir, however, did not mention that Kasparov had lost his title back in 1993 when he refused to play under FIDE auspices. As to being an exceptional player, Kasparov had been exceptional before he took bak his move in the game against Polgar in Linares years ago. Recently he has been noticed in going back to his hotel suite during important games. Why? On Kasparov's joining the political fray in Russia :"It was a great surprise for me. I wish him all the best." My comment: Hi, Vladimir! Have you been sleeping all these years while Kasparov was so actively involved in politics? You have known him for so many years! Did you ever hear about Kasparov supporting Eltsin, general Lebed etc.? Or his writing war-mongering articles for 'Wall Street Journal'? On his own political aspirations: "If I was not a chess player I would probably be an artist or musician." My comment: It is the right of every human being to have his preferences and hobbies in life. One thing we may be happy about Kramnik is that he at least will not support such atrocities against humanity as his 'great predecessor'. However, not participation is participation as well. By abstaining we also help to support injustice and cruelty. As to Kramnik's love for art and music, I am all out for it. The only thing, however, is that to write well on him, I'll have to catch up in these fields! |

No, FIDE lost the control of the World Champion title.
And it showed it was proper that it lost it when it went into a lottery-like stupid KO system of speedgames, where a "match" means two speedgames and ties are settled by blitz. This is the biggest joke in the entire history of chess, and FIDE is both the one making the joke and at the same time the brunt of it. Until FIDE stops with this stupid speedgame/KO/two-game/blitz crap, nobody should ever pay attention to anything they ever say regarding the World Championship.
