Default Chess gift for 12th birthday [UK]

My nephew here in the UK is a very enthusiastic chess player, and I want
to give him a chess-related present for his 12th birthday. He already
has chess sets, chess books, chess computers, chess programs, a
subscription to a chess magazine, and he's even got the new DVD "Game
Over" about Kasparov vs. the computer. I'd really like to give him
something special, or at least usual, up to about £50 in value, maybe
Kasparov-related. I'd really appreciate some suggestions, please, as I
do wish to encourage him with his chess, which is his great passion in
life.

Thanks !

I'd say the easy answer is: more books. There exist many excellent
biographies of great chess masters, that everyone "should" have.
Or you could ask him what books are on his wish list.

This reminds me of the following little joke:
- I'll buy you a book for your birthday.
- No thanks, I already have a book!

chess computers, chess programs, a
subscription to a chess magazine, and he's even got the new DVD "Game

Kasparov, The Test of Time, is a must have for an advanced player.
Also, Kasparov, My great predecessors, vol.1, 2 etc., are great gifts.

Would he want a subscription at an online chess site, such as ICC? One year
would fit your budget.

Someone once posted some wondeful chess art - black and white photographs of
chess pieces - for sale, but I'm not sure if a 12-yeard-old would like that.

Has he read Searching for Bobby Fischer? Smullyan's Chess Mysteries of
Sherlock Holmes? Neither of these are instruction books, which is good,
because you don't have to worry about matching his level.

What about the DVD (or tape version) "Pro Chess - The video chess mentor"
presented by Yasser Sierewan.

Total running time 3 hrs 46 mins.
Four study segments - Introduction to chess - Novice - Intermediate -
Advanced

It costs nowhere near £50 though.

I forgot to say - I have been working through Yasser's DVD and its the best
one I've seen. Packed with information and tips. Very entertaining and very
informative
It will take your nephew ages to get through it all thereby making it very
good value as a present

The London Chess Centre has signed copies of both volumes of `On My Great
Predecessors' for £35 each:

Maybe a demo board for his room. They are $17.00 US at Cajun Chess or you might
find something at the London Chess Center.

Perhaps membership in BCF and an entry fee into a rated tournament.
