Default Fischer's Most Sensational Victory??

I think his most sensational victory was the 3rd round game
of the 1972 world championship match against Spassky.

It came after a 1st round loss and a 2nd round forfeit!

It was his first ever win against Spassky and showed he
could play at that level.

After he got his feet wet with that win he went on to smash
Spassky in the first half of that match.

Maybe yes, maybe no. This argument will go forever.

The original question from Sam Sloan was why Fischer's first win over Reshevsky
wasn't given in full in MY 60 MEMORABLE GAMES which was published in 1969
(before his match with Spassky).

I have his first book ("Bobby Fischer's Games of Chess") in front of me,

and
the game in question, Fischer-Reshevsky US Ch 1958-59, is not in there.

The
game we are talking about was played in December, 1958. The Introduction

to
this book is entitled "My Chess Career, May 1955-May 1958." This book

clearly
went to press before the game was played. -- Bob Musicant

TheFischer-Reshevsky game was cited in a note to game 26 (move 7) of MY 60
MEMORABLE GAMES.

GM Larry Evans said he will explain why it was excluded in full when he

and
Bobby Fischer selected these 60 games in his next column on 6/21 at
http://www.worldchessnetwork.com
(Fischer's Famous Trap).

I'm just going to guess that Fischer would not identify as a great game one
that he won due to analysis prepared by someone else. I'll be interested in
seeing what the straight skinny is on this.

Or -
He already had one game vs. Reshevsky in this rather (at the time) outmoded
Dragon variation. Plus one vs Larsen. Was "enough already" the thinking
behind leaving it out?

Bob repeated the claim of authorship about three years ago in a lecture
at London's Athenaeum chess club. I am certain it is correct.

Fair enough Si, but as someone else mentioned:
"The game is on page 59 in The Games of Robert J. Fischer by Wade and
O'Connell."
Why didn't Wade mention it there?

The league season closes in London over the Summer months as Alan may
recall. There is a small chance I shall be seeing Bob in the next few
weeks, but more probably it will be this winter. I shall try to remember to
ask him. I am not prepared to ring Bob over this matter.

Great Big Al

It's been over twenty years, but as I recall Alan is shorter than me. :-)

Regards,

Simon.

I had to ring Bob on another matter, so I brought this up. Bob could not
remember why he had not mentioned it in the book; which is fair enough, he
is in his eighties and this was a long time ago. Bob did confirm the claim
and further stated specifically that Fischer got the idea from his (R.G.
Wade's) analysis.

Simon.

See FISCHER'S FAMOUS TRAP for all the moves and why Bobby didn't use it in My
60 Memorable Games.
