Does anybody have any news, results or standings, etc, from the 2004
United States Women's Championship which is currently being held at
St. John's University in Manhattan? Is there a website that has
up-to-date coverage of the event? Thanks....

2004 US WOMENS CHAMPIONSHIP: NEW DETAILS

The 2004 United States Women's Championship will be held June 17-26 at
St. John's University in Manhattan. An International round robin
Tournament will be playing there concurrently.

The top seven rated women and the 2003 champion (Anna Hahn) are
invited to this event. If any players decline their invitations,
further invitations will be sent to players in order of their April
USCF ratings, but no one rated below 2200 will be invited.

If seven or eight players accept their invitations, the tournament
will be a round robin. If six or fewer accept, it will be a double
round robin. The prize fund will total at least $8000.

The Swiss system Championship scheduled for this fall in San Diego
will be held as planned, but will be titled the 2005 US Championships
and will include those who qualify from the preliminary tournaments
plus seeded players.

Besides the title of the 2004 US Women's Champion, the tournament will
also determine the fourth player for the 2004 US Women's Olympiad
Team. The three top women by rating, Polgar, Zatonski and Krush have
already qualified for the 2004 US Women's Olympiad Team by virtue of
the rating formula criteria. The winner of this tournament will be the
fourth player for the US Women's Olympiad Team. In the event of a tie
for first including more than one than one candidate for
qualification, a playoff will be held immediately after the tournament
to determine the qualifier.

If the Championship is won by one or more of the Olympiad Team
qualifiers (Polgar, Zatonskih or Krush), a four game match will be
held immediately after the US Championship between the top two
finishers who are not already qualified Olympiad Team members. The
winner of this match will be the fourth member of the 2004 US Women's
Olympiad Team. In case of a multiple tie by the top finishers not
already qualified for the team, they will play a double round robin
immediately after the event to determine the fourth member of the US
Women's Olympiad Team.

I found a link, given in the current "The Week In Chess" #502

http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/twic502.html

The webcoverage is available at:

http://facpub.stjohns.edu/~kerrt/200...hess_main.html

WIM Jennifer Shahade is ripping through the field, with 3.5 out of
4. She holds a 1.5 point lead, with 2 games left. She has beaten US
Women's Olympiad team member WGM Zatonskih (who is the only other
player with a plus score, at 2.0/3).
Shahade is now practically a lock to gain the last spot on the US
team, as an alternate.

On the other hand, WGM Rusudan Goletiani is having a miserable event,
and is at "-2" with just 0.5/3

Although she was supposed to have been invited to play, Anna Hahn
has apparently declined to participate in the event.

IM Irina Krush is having a rather mediocre event, having lost to
Zatonskih and been upset by WFM Tatev Abrahamyan, who is rated over
200 lower than Krush.

Krush and Zatonskih are competing in the event, despite the fact
that they have already been seeded onto the team, by virtue of their
ratings. On the other hand, GM Zsuzsa Polgar has opted not to play. It
is regrettable that the field is only comprised of 7 players, as the
US Women's Chess Championship has too few rounds to allow players to
scored FIDE norms for titles. With a 2655 performance rating, Shahade
would have been on track to gain both an IM norm and a WGM norm.

10) US Women's Championship
The US Women's Championship and a Category VIII International
tournament take place at St. John's University in Manhattan. The event
is organised by Dr. Frank Brady author of the book Bobby Fischer:
Profile of a Prodigy.
