Thank you, Tim. I see that the record for latest castling has
been broken, and in fact has stood at Black's 48th since 1994.
The game Neshewat - Garrison, Detroit 1994 has 14 0-0 and
48 ... 0-0, and thus has castling move numbers summing to 62.
Is this a record?

Default Chess records - late castling

Somewhat off your original topic, but firmly in the realm of obscure data: I
once played a master level game where neither player castled. The game just
reached the 40 move time control, when a player resigned. I know this is
hardly normal, but are there many precedents? Thanks, Phil Innes

PS: I believe I suffered one check, the only one in the game, but blocked
it!

Default Ultimate castling

About 25 years ago, at a small CCA tournament I directed in Florida, one of
the games ended in .... 0-0 mate (at about move 40, I believe).

I saw this possibility coming, about three moves ahead of time, so I started
looking through black's scoresheet (discreetly, I trust) to make sure
castling was still legal. It was. Sure enough, after the final move, white
blurted out, "That's still legal??"

White's king had walked up to f6 in the late middlegame. ....Rf8+ alone
would not have been mate, because then white could have played Kg7.

Greatest number of castlings: 3?!? You don't happen to know how the
illegal move came about, do you?

Dave.

It's a game that you won't find in any chess databases because the moves
can't be keyed in.
Heidenfield castled k-side, then moved his king back to e1. Much later in
the game he castled q-side.
He still managed to lose.

I remember a blitz game from one of those gruelling weekend club tournaments
in a crowded coffeehouse. The player castled using a stolen rook from a
neighboring board! I am positive that you can't find that game in any
database either :-)
