Somewhere at great distance to the West is another city, say as far as Munster is from Münster, called Trono. I have met people who claim to have been there, and say the natives all wear 'turtlenecks', but they always smirk when telling the story. In films they always show the "Canadian Flag" as some sort of road-kill Rorschach shape on a field of snow. Phil I used to teach half way between "Trono" and a Motor City suburb, called Windsor. When I enthusiastically told my students that English is an excellent auxiliary language to convey simple mathematical ideas, they booed me. That was the only time in my life that I was booed by students or in general in public. When Leopold Infeld lived in Toronto he prayed to be allowed to die on Friday (since he didn't want to live through another boring torontian weekend). Things have changed a lot in this respect though since his days. Regards, Wlod |

What country is that flag from?
Such a long patriotic thread thread would not be complete without my friends' statement: pledges of allegiance ------------------------------------------------------------- i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the repulic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all. i pledge allegiance to my lawn mower and to the weekend ritual for which it stands one lawnmower under me a john deere with horsepower and clippings for all. i pledge allegiance to my car a luxury sports sedan from abroad and to the commute for which it stands one cellular phone under dark airconditioned glass mostly busy with monthly payments too big to disclose. i pledge allegiance to my wife a delta delta delta former pledge and to the suburban home for which she stands one talk show after another and then some soaps but such a clean house with energy to spare for social occasions and occasional ****ing. i pledge allegiance to my microwave and to the beep-beep convenience for which it stands, high-power, low-wattage, with ten power settings and popcorn for all. i pledge allegiance to my lawn, and to the neighborhood for which it stands, one chemical treatment, under chemlawn, indestructible, with walking and playing for no one. Marek Lugowski / Marie Coffin 21 July 1992 Cincinnati, Ohio / Ames, Iowa Finally you have gained the proper perspective. Regards, Wlod |

I was there a few times in the Summer on business and not much happened in the old city until about 3 in the afternoon when people went shopping, then dined at 8 on truly excellent food for a tourist zone, then at maybe 11pm you could hardly move in the streets for people, jugglers and Andeans playing music while you sat on a terrace drinking some brandy, and a man [student] close by attempted standing on a cube for 24 hours without moving for the world record. later a walk along the grand terrace before the frontenac where churchill met roosevelt, and a look down at the old town 300 feet vertically below travelling further up the north side of the st lawrence there is a falls, higher than niagra, then on an island on the river ordinary life of the locals making a few dollars selling jams and such, then after great distances, the river widening slightly, you encounter a rare town on the coastal road, and I recommend drinking ordinaire in a cafe rather than canadian coke - a burp ever sip! what do they put in it? quebec city is more french than montreal which could be called 'international' later i took my daughter to montréal to look at mcgill univ, which she didn't like 'but was good enough for engineers' and we went to lib arts concordia univ instead, which is a university in 2 tower blocks and an underpass - she liked it, maybe good for her post-graduate study the difficulty was that she had much financial aide in the US but none in Canada, even so the result would be the same, and the curricula were probably better in the canadian univs than in the us - but after living in vermont she chose a californian univ in montréal the waitress said she had been to the states, to boston, and what a scandal the food was (!) everything overcooked and such small portions! she salted her speech with french adjectives some of which i understood, though not from schoolbooks on the way back we took the pretty route and got lost and crossed into the very rural and poor mountain area of the north-east kingdom in vermont - i asked the us boarder guard 'where the hell is this?' and he said 'you got it' When Leopold Infeld lived in Toronto he prayed to be allowed to die on Friday (since he didn't want to live through another boring torontian weekend). Things have changed a lot in this respect though since his days. There is someone here who says that the trono cc has moved, but still has a strongish player resident, about 2350. Cordially, Phil Regards, Wlod |

Where the hell is Quebec? ;-) Its a mythical country to the north of Maine in the United States, no one has ever been there. The capital of the place is called Quebec City, of course - it is not a very imaginative myth. This would explain my terrible play in my last tournament there - it was just a dream. Somewhere at great distance to the West is another city, say as far as Munster is from Münster, called Trono. Or Tranna, T.O., etc. Like many other mythical places the variety of names is a giveaway. I have met people who claim to have been there, and say the natives all wear 'turtlenecks', but they always smirk when telling the story. Rumor has it they always play 1g3 or 1... g6. Even when playing go. William Hyde EOS Department Duke University |
