Default Audience or the lack of it, ouch!

There are more players and officials in the WCC in Libya than people in the
audience. A picture on the Chessbase web site shows a mere four individuals
in the audience. No wonder that there is a lack of sponsors too!

I wonder if the organizers track the size of the off-site audience who watch
the games via the Internet. I don't see any numbers published in this
regard. Or is the size of the off-site audience also so small, that
publishing it would do more harm than good for attracting sponsors?

The best place for attracting the largest audience of penguins is
Antarctica.

This FIDE world title event has gone widely ignored. It is another blow to
chess promotion -- another step downwards.

That's a shame, this tournament has produced a few dozens of good games.

And nobody to watch it.From a competitive stand point the Championship play has
been exciting.Really a shame no one is their to watch it live.It was fun to
watch Kasparov-Karpov here in NY back in 1991.Chess is like boxing in that no
one knows who the true World Champ is.In my view Krammnik is the true World
Champ

The latest update on the Chessbase web site claims that about 1000
spectators were watching the WCC finals on the playchess.com server.

Assuming the same number of spectators on the ICC and the official WCC
server, that would provide a ball park estimate of a total of 3000 on-line
spectators. Not particularly an overwhelming number, but much better than
the 4 on-site spectators.

Sufficient to attract commercial sponsors?

Maybe there is a link? Maybe players play more drawishly when there is a
live audience?

It`s not a World Championship.
The time control is ridiculous.
They have BLITZ in there.

Of course, nobody who cares about quality chess is taking this seriously any
more than they would any other speedgame tournament. Sponsors are probably
more interested in things like World Championship matches and
supertournaments at classical time controls. They`d probably be even more
interested in such things if they forbade agreed draws in under 40 moves or
something.

I totally agree! Blitz...or any other "speed" chess is not really "chess",
imo..it may be a form of chess...but that is all. Re this draw
controversy...seems to me that while it may not attract sponsors and
such...I fail to see from most of the postings griping about it that the one
doing the griper is a Grand Master...seems that a lot of it is from players
that could not remotely grasp what is going on in those masters minds. Odd,
that a draw could foster such resentment....I would think that the player
who over draws is not going to win many tournaments. Also...I can well see
the advantage of a "early" draw if your next opponent is going to be a much
more difficult one than the present and it is a opponent that one wishes to
win against. In the end...what really matters is that someone comes out the
winner. It all kind of reminds me of these people that bitch about things
but never achieve the status of those they are bitching about.
