Default Adams proves why garbage openings ruin title chances

Overall, I got the impression that K was playing the half hour chess game as
a half hour chess game, i.e. tailored to reality, whereas A was trying to
play the half hour chess game as a classical chess game, i.e. not tailored
to reality.

Therefore, A had a winning position and would have certainly won under
regular time control. But K got practical chances that A did not take into
account in his attempt to play classical chess, and at the end, K won, I
would say, deservedly so.

he plays, as white:

1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5

We'll hear about how the system is "playable," but the fact is, 3. d4 is
"theory" for a reason: it's the OBVIOUSLY BEST MOVE. He just handed
equality to Black at MOVE THREE.

In top level games, the player who deviates from the best theory first
usually loses. This game is yet another example.

I note that in the middle game Adams was exchange and a passed pawn up. He
did not find the right line to simplify into an ending while maintaining

an
advantage in material or initiative, whereas his opponent did exactly the
right thing, he 'complicated' seeking counter chances and found them.

Given a respectable time frame in which to play the game his opponent

might
even have resigned at move 24 as hopelessly behind. In a fast game he did
the right thing and Adams lost the thread of it, and succumbed to a

cheapo.

The scandal is that this is a purportedly a world quality chess tournament
which is organised so as to produce results like a who-cares game in a
coffee-shop.

Adams was trying to cheat theory with a simple move that leads to

relatively
simple (but weak) lines for white. He lost, as he deserved to.

"I ain't gonna play Sun City" and the world's best chessplayers should

not
play Libya, which banned the Israeli players from competing. Shame on

the
Americans who went!

Yep, I agree with this - Kazim. is the deserved winner under these
circs. the title may be meaningless, the money in his bank acct. on the
other hand looks not to bad at all..
