As I suspected, Bobby Fischer was grabbed at Narita airport in Tokyo
when he was on his way to Baguio in the Philippines to take part in a radio talk show. I wonder how widely this will be reported. The following article is from: http://www.inq7.net/brk/2004/jul/18/brkoth_1-1.htm: ***BEGIN ARTICLE*** FORMER WORLD CHESS CHAMP FISCHER ON WAY TO BAGUIO WHEN NABBED IN JAPAN Posted: 11:47 AM (Manila Time) | Jul. 18, 2004 By Vincent Cabreza Inquirer News Service BAGUIO CITY -- Bobby Fischer, the reclusive former world chess champion, was on his way to this city to resume a radio talk show he hosted two years ago over a local station when he was held by Japanese immigration officials on Wednesday, the Inquirer learned on Saturday. Pablo Mercado, Baguio station manager of Bombo Radyo Philippines, said Fischer sent him an e-mail announcing his return. But the grandmaster was detained by immigration officials at the Narita International Airport. "He stays in Japan," Mercado said. Fischer was a frequent Baguio visitor, and had been given special prime time coverage by Mercado to discuss his self-imposed exile from the United States. "Maybe the US finally decided to have him extradited, so it's possible they pulled strings among their political allies like Japan and the Philippines. He was very passionate about the evils of America," Mercado said. The Department of Foreign Affairs said Fischer was never on its watch list. A check by the Inquirer with both the DFA Ilocos office in La Union province and its hotline in Manila said they were never alerted by US Embassy officials about Fischer's Baguio visits. Mercado said Fischer's relative obscurity in Baguio was convenient. Fischer discovered the city through his friend and confidant, Eugene Torre, the Baguio-based Filipino grandmaster and president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines. Mercado said Fischer was also drawn to Baguio because it was celebrated for hosting the world chess championship match between Anatoli Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi at the Baguio Convention Center in 1978. During an Inquirer interview that was aired live over Bombo Radyo in 2001, Fischer often made anti-Semitic references when speaking about American Jews who were "destroying the world." He criticized the American government for fueling a conspiracy to defraud and discredit him. In the same broadcasts, Fischer frequently discussed a chess game he invented, which he called the Fischer Random. He claimed that US businessmen wanted to steal his invention. "He actually said he was glad when 9/11 (the terror attacks in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001) occurred because he believed the US needed the kick in the pants," Mercado said. He said Fischer made five live broadcasts that lasted for three hours since Torre hooked him up with Bombo Radyo in 2000. Fischer recorded all of these broadcasts on compact discs, which he sent to Mercado. "We hope he makes it back to Baguio. We know he felt safe here," Mercado said. ***END ARTICLE*** -- banana "The thing I hate about you, Rowntree, is the way you give Coca-Cola to your scum, and your best teddy-bear to Oxfam, and expect us to lick your frigid fingers for the rest of your frigid life."
