Whilst presumably not mentioning all the chess books the USCF bought in Serbia. That's a good point. How did the USCF continue to import Yugoslav chess books (such as Informants) during the period of United States economic sanctions against Yugoslavia? I read something to the effect that the USCF simply continued to receive these books during the embargo, while not bothering to send payment until afterward (if at all). |

I read something to the effect that the USCF simply continued to receive these books during the embargo, From 12810: ***BEGIN*** Sec. 2. The following are prohibited, notwithstanding the existence of any rights or obligations conferred or imposed by any international agreement or any contract entered into or any license or permit granted before the effective date of this order, except to the extent provided in regulations, orders, directives, or licenses which may hereafter be issued pursuant to this order: (a) The importation into the United States of any goods originating in, or services performed in, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), exported from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) after May 30, 1992, or any activity that promotes or is intended to promote such importation; ***END*** I'm not sure of the ramifications of the 'notwithstanding' clause here. Maybe someone with more US legal knowledge than I have, could advise? while not bothering to send payment until afterward (if at all). Out of interest, did any US journalists go to Sveti Stefan to report the match? If they did, who paid their hotel bills? -- banana "The thing I hate about you, Rowntree, is the way you give Coca-Cola to your scum, and your best teddy-bear to Oxfam, and expect us to lick your frigid fingers for the rest of your frigid life." Maybe someone with more US legal knowledge than I have, could advise? It seems to me that even if the USCF had a legal contract, signed prior to 'the effective date of this (Executive) order', to import chess books from Yugoslavia, the import of those books would be prohibited unless an exception were made to permit it 'pursuant to this (Executive) order'. Out of interest, did any US journalists go to Sveti Stefan to report the match? As I recall, GM Yasser Seirawan was there to cover the Fischer-Spassky II match for 'Inside Chess' (of which he was the editor). If they did, who paid their hotel bills? Perhaps Yasser Seirawan just stayed there with some new friends. :-) --Nick |

Out of interest, did any US journalists go to Sveti Stefan to report the match? If they did, who paid their hotel bills? Yasser Sierawan went, but I don't recall the others. Several Fischer books were published immediately afterward, and this is sufficient to show a commercial connection. However, the press may be immune -- freedom of the press, and all that jazz.... |
