"Thanks for being my ****** Nick.
StanB"

Maybe ****** Nick was intended as a Nickname, in which case capitalization
and no komma is quite correct?

That is true; yet I don't believe that Stan continued to use that phrase as a
nickname for Mr. Bourbaki He varied, calling Bourbaki "Bwana Nick," and so
forth. If it was intended as a nickname, it didn't "stick," the way, for
example, "Nick-the-liar" has (for obvious reasons).
If that was the intent, then I erred in trying to "correct" Stan's
punctuation.

The prisoners in Siberia were probably guilty of
something, at least opposition to the state,

The great majority was guilty of *nothing*.

and they had a chance to
get out.

A significant percentage did not.
