There is also the earlier pamphlet by Michael Taylor, The Lewis Chessmen, (British Museum Publications, 1978). I have often wondered whether the story about their discovery in Uig, Lewis, might not be a fabrication. They may even be fakes. Some say the pieces include the earliest known examples of an ecclesiastical bishop; I'm not sure whether this is true or not. What does Stratford say about where they might have been before they were exhibited by Roderik Ririe in 1831? How does he cover Alexander Macleod and Calum nan Sprot? Kirkpatrick Sharpe, who bought 10 of them early on, is supposed to have 'found' another one later. Hmmmmm. -- banana "The thing I hate about you, Rowntree, is the way you give Coca-Cola to your scum, and your best teddy-bear to Oxfam, and expect us to lick your frigid fingers for the rest of your frigid life." So then, you are saying there are at least three versions of the Lewis
Island set, BM, RC, and SAC? I have the ones sold by House of Staunton which is the old John Jauqes brand out of Surrey, which come in a nice heavy cardboard box wtih interlocking cardboard strips forming storage partitions for each individual piecce. Does anybody know if this Jaques set has pieces identical to the BM repro version? All of the set give me a well weighted and balanced impression, e.g. ike a nice stable Staunton set, and thus opposite to most of the other hundreds of decoritive patterns. For instance the HOS website's descriptions of the pawns, as like "tombstones", which might make them sound as being too thin to stay put if the board is slightly jostled. But actually they are quite thick, shaped more like Roman mileposts. Also, the brown and white armies feature differing appearance for each side, including the pawns, and I was able to match up all of them in appearance to one of the originals. All in all, I found this set handsome, historical, playable! W.H. King |
