history of 3-fold repetition and 50-move rule by
Jud McCranie
When did the 3-fold repetition and 50-move rule come about? The 1954
Reinfeld book "How to be a winner at chess" gives perpetual check, but
not these two rules. Of course, with 3-fold rule, the perpetual check
rule is not needed (also you don't have to judge whether or not a
position is perpetual check). The 1970 book by Harkness has these two
rules, but not perpetual check. So did they...

Advice for beginner by
Jack Jones
I used to play against a Novag Solo Chess computer as a kid. It's ELO
rating was estimated at 1300. I beat it on its hardest setting, so I
sold it. The plan was to get a stronger one but I never did (not having
much money!). That was almost 20 years ago! So anyway I decided just
recently that I really used to enjoy a good old game of chess. So.....
I downloaded Crafty and I'm ready to go...

cheap analysis sets? by
Elijah
Hi. I want to get some cheap analysis sets for my students. I see
fairly cheap ones on the Chess House site (7.95 or 5.95 if more than
10)
Cajun Chess used to sell the boards & pieces but now only sells the
boards. Any help on where to find these cheap?

Draws in professional chess -- strange contradictory attitude by
pauldepstein@att.net
There is a most bizarre contradiction in the way professional results
are discussed in the chess community. Almost everyone prefers
decisive games to draws, and, of course, draws are rarely included in
the highlights of an event.
However, whenever there is a tie for first (like at Corus), the
undefeated player is singled out for particular media praise -- more
than those with the same score who...

"Seirawan Chess" by
M Winther
In "Seirawan Chess", invented by GM Yasser Seirawan, the rules are the
same as in orthodox chess, except that two pieces, the Elephant (N+R)
and the Hawk (N+B), are placed in the reserve. Whenever a piece leaves
its initial square, one of the extra pieces can immediately be
introduced to the vacant square. So this is a double move, comparable
to castling. Should a player refrain from inserting...

Learn Chess Or Call Me An Idiot!! FREE Electronic Chess book for Beginners. by
Chessnia
http://www.chessnia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=246
After working for the Sydney Academy Of Chess for more than a year,
doing chess coaching at many schools all over Sydney, I was inspired
by the experience and a few months ago I started working on an
interesting project: a free book which would complement my coaching at
those schools so that kids could use it as reference, but also...

Sanny
What rules should we follow in Chess to win games.
Here are basic rules which I already know.
1. 3 Pawns= 1 Knight = 1 Bishop
2. 5 Pawn = 1 Rook
3. 9 Pawns = 1 Queen
4. King should be saved from attacks.
5. Pawn should be Promoted fast to Queen in end game
6. Knight & Bishops should be promoted ahead to attack opponent.

Inside Chess Magazine by
Ken Cobb
Just remembering when Inside Chess came out twice a month. I loved
that magazine back then when I was actively playing. I know that
Yasser was doing a column at the Chess cafe website, but its just not
the same.
Are there any magazines picking up the slack left by Inside Chess? Has
the internet taken the place of it, and if so what news sources do you
guys use?

Observations upon a new treatise of chess, by George Walker by
John Townsend
"Observations upon a new treatise of chess, by George Walker" is the title
of a pamphlet which ridicules the alterations to the laws of chess proposed
in Walker's "New treatise on chess", 1841.
According to Staunton, the pamphlet emanated from the London Chess Club.
Has anyone seen a copy, please, or know where one can be seen?
Thanks and regards,

Draws at Linares 2007 by
David Kane
As some of you might recall, our sage help bot has
explained draws in professional chess as being
the result of some mysterious "lack of motivation"
of the game's GMs. His "evidence" was
none other than his personal experience playing
at some non-elite level - even that unspecified.
When faced with actual evidence of GM
tournaments, help bot becomes unable to
process it.. But that does not stop...

Who is judgementday @ clerk.com ? by
samsloan
It seems obvious that judgementday @ clerk.com is the same person as
the Fake Sam Sloan. The posting pattern is the same. The writing style
is similar. For example, both post so much that they clog up the
rec.games.chess.politics forum so that all others are discouraged from
posting.
However, I am not convinced that they are both the same person.
Also, there are two Fake Sam Sloans. One posts...

Great News about USCF Finances by
samsloan
Sloan, I am sure the readers of this forum
are getting tired of constantly hearing your repeated lies. During my
watch, fiscal year 2004 and fiscal year 2006 the USCF actually made
money. On the other hand, according to you the USCF has lost money
during your watch, the current fiscal year.
First, I must tell you the GREAT NEWS.
The news is that the USCF had a SURPLUS for February.
The...
