Rob Mitchell's Call to Bill Hall by
samsloan
Today, Rob Mitchell called USCF Executive Director Bill Hall to advise
and recommend that he retain counsel to file suit against Sam Sloan
for revealing that Bill Hall has often been absent from work.
It is not likely that Bill Hall will take this advice because such a
suit would be without legal basis since the members have a right to
know and therefore Sam Sloan has an obligation to reveal...

A Serious Problem with MonRoi and the US Championship by
samsloan
Joe Lux has uncovered a serious problem with Monroi. If he did not
discover it, he is the first to report it.
It seems that two newspapers have refused to publish game scores that
first appeared on the Monroi website, because MonRoi is claiming a
copyright on the games.
It is well established that scores of a chess game cannot be
copyrighted. However, the USCF is in no position to go to court...

Murrow HS does disservice to Shawn Martinez by
paperpest@gmail.com
In today's NY Times, you can read the article at http://www.nytimes.com,
there's an article about Shawn Martinez who plays at expert level and
technically is a student at Edward R. Murrow High School. He is
failing all his classes, he should not be on the chess team.

My USCF executive board choices by
Zero
I read the profiles in the recent monthly issue of CL. I like Sam
Sloan and that guy from San Francisco that has done all those cool
things and he like has roomates with 3 chess players.
also that guy who has a phd and a law degree seemed really cool too.
he seemed like he was really smart and we need smart leaders in charge
of the uscf.
the other statements were really boring meaning that...

What's happended to Micky Adams by
renaissanceman@i-plus.net
What's happened to Mikey Adams? Has he withdrawn from chess? He is
conspiculously absent from major tournamants for the last 3/4 months.
Inquiring minds would like to know.

Bark!
Recently my Fritz 10 interface was changed. I cant click most of the buttons
like ELO, rank info etc. Same in Fritz 9. Maybe my serial is old? Can I fix
that by registering new account?

Updating Fritz10 by
renaissanceman@i-plus.net
How can you update Fritz10 without going on the ChessBase game site
and getting the message your Fritz10 is updated, which it obviously
isn't? ChessBase update procedures are very annoying and customer
unfriendly. Any Suggestions?

history of 3-fold repetition and 50-move rule by
Jud McCranie
When did the 3-fold repetition and 50-move rule come about? The 1954
Reinfeld book "How to be a winner at chess" gives perpetual check, but
not these two rules. Of course, with 3-fold rule, the perpetual check
rule is not needed (also you don't have to judge whether or not a
position is perpetual check). The 1970 book by Harkness has these two
rules, but not perpetual check. So did they...

Advice for beginner by
Jack Jones
I used to play against a Novag Solo Chess computer as a kid. It's ELO
rating was estimated at 1300. I beat it on its hardest setting, so I
sold it. The plan was to get a stronger one but I never did (not having
much money!). That was almost 20 years ago! So anyway I decided just
recently that I really used to enjoy a good old game of chess. So.....
I downloaded Crafty and I'm ready to go...

cheap analysis sets? by
Elijah
Hi. I want to get some cheap analysis sets for my students. I see
fairly cheap ones on the Chess House site (7.95 or 5.95 if more than
10)
Cajun Chess used to sell the boards & pieces but now only sells the
boards. Any help on where to find these cheap?

Draws in professional chess -- strange contradictory attitude by
pauldepstein@att.net
There is a most bizarre contradiction in the way professional results
are discussed in the chess community. Almost everyone prefers
decisive games to draws, and, of course, draws are rarely included in
the highlights of an event.
However, whenever there is a tie for first (like at Corus), the
undefeated player is singled out for particular media praise -- more
than those with the same score who...
