Bauer Fails Again! Bauer's Man, Tom Vilsack, has just dropped out of
the race for US President
Bauer has worked for Tom Vilsack for years, even giving him chess
lessons, but support by Bauer was not enough to win so Vilsack has
dropped out of the race for US President.
So, it looks like we will not have a chess player in the White House
after all, unless another one runs.

Photographs from NY27 - help needed by
Yuri Garrett
Hello everybody,
we are about to publish an Italian translation of Alekhine's New York
1927 tournament book. We have been looking for photographs from that
event but found very few (just two actually, kindly donated by the
Marshall Chess Club in New York).
I was wondering if anyone from the international chess community could
provide us with some interesting material from that tournament...

The Payment of $13,358.36 to Polgar by
samsloan
Polgar and Truong are claiming the right to be paid these large
amounts of money on the basis of verbal agreements with Frank Niro
while Niro was Executive Director.
However, oral contracts are not valid with corporations unless they
are confirmed in writing.
I will give one example from the stock market, since I worked in the
stock market for years.

Jessie Gilbert - breaking news by
thedarkman
This is an update for the message below:
News is very fluid, but currently Jessie is lead story on Radio 5
tomorrow am, with about 14 minutes of recording being played over 3
slots at 6.05, 7.05 and 8.05. It'll go out again on Radio 4 'Today',
Radio 1 and possibly BBC TV News, and will be on their website. They
also have comments from NSPCC and CPS. Solicitors for Ian Gilbert,
Jessie's estranged...

Excessive Moderation by the Moderator by

Excessive Moderation by the Moderator
I am really outraged by what has just happened. The moderator at USCF
Forums has three times removed a perfectly legitimate posting by me
which criticized the move to Crossville and the current state of
financial affairs in Crossville.
I suspect that the moderator is a member of the USCF staff in
Crossville. Otherwise, there is no possible reason why the...

On the Collapse of Negotiations with AF4C by
samsloan
A very important point.
On January 8, 2007, Jerry Hanken, who regularly writes for Chess Life,
announced on the USCF website that the USCF had made a deal with
Merrill Lynch to sponsor the US Championship.
In fact, no such deal had been made nor was the USCF engaged in any
negotiations with Merrill, Lynch.
A few days later, word came that the actual proposed sponsor with whom

Michael Goeller
Anyone with information about this weekend's US Amateur Team Events, please post information and results. I'd like to know most of all who won, but also interested in number of people attending and any other interesting details. Thanks! I'm sure others would like to know also!

Disastrous Results of the Move to Crossville by
samsloan
Disastrous Results of the Move to Crossville
The move to Crossville has proven to be a financial disaster. On just
one item alone, employee salaries and benefits, the USCF is spending
around $200,000 more per year on employee costs than it spent in New
Windsor. Perhaps more importantly, the new employees are more likely
to make mistakes, such as all the problems and errors in the TLAs
which...

The Life Of Jessie Gilbert by
thedarkman
This Friday, February 23, BBC Radio 5 will be
broadcasting an exclusive interview with Angela
Gilbert, the mother of Jessie Gilbert, who died in
tragic circumstances in July last year.
Angela Gilbert is not a chess player and will be
focusing more on Jessie the person and her daughter
than on Jessie the player but all chess players will
find this programme of interest.

these candidates will be immediately deleted by the moderators.
On the other hand, there are other candidates about whom the most vile
accusations are allowed. Posters can say anything, no matter how...

Goichberg, Brady and the "Sam Sloan Award" by
samsloan
Dear All: Here are the facts about the "award." Moments before the
start of the round of the U.S. Team Tournament, Leroy Dubeck showed me
the Sam Sloan award and I cracked up because of its symbolism (and
since it had a candle illuminating it!) I could hardly stop laughing,
considering the whole thing a lark. He then asked if I would present
it. Since I am constantly asked at my University and...

Why you lose at chess by
Dr. Dave Regis (remove NO_SPAM)
I'm trying to come up with a list of reasons why we lose at chess, which
is something approaching comprehensive while remaining short enough to
be manageable. I have examined the book of the same title by Tim
Harding, the book about chess mistakes by Andrew Soltis and the long
grim catalogue of disasters which comprise my own games. The list is
probably doing very well at being...

Speed Chess for the Slow Time Control Tournament Player: Good or Bad? by
chipschap@gmail.com
I've read a lot of conflicting advice about what type of practice is
good for the "class level" slow time control tournament player.
One camp says that playing blitz is harmful because it leads to
superficial play and there is no opportunity to practice deep analysis.
Another camp says that winning players owe some of their success to
blitz play, as blitz allows you to play many, many games,...
