Questioning Silman's Advice by
tewall@lycos.com
Jeremy Silman advises against making threatening moves hoping your
opponent will miss the threat, but the World Champion missed a one move
mate. So I'm rethinking this advice. If the WC can miss a one move
mate, who knows what my opponent might miss?
That must rank as the worst blunder in WC history, perhaps in
Grandmaster chess period(?). I don't recall ever seeing a grandmaster
miss a one...

Hi guys!
Don't pull down your pants yet for a FIDE drug test, but I just
incorporated in Wyoming. My Wyoming Corporation (the Charleston Chess
Association, Inc.) wants to compete against Bill Goichberg. I therefore
as a corporate officer apply in the name of the corporation for an
affiliate ID with the United States Chess Federation.

How to be an 1800+ ? by
flavius@logical-games.net
I'm a hobby chess player, around 1100, maybe less, maybe more a little
bit.
I want to improve up to 1800 (or more if it's possible, I just want to
keep my target realistic).
Chess is my hobby, so I don't want chess trainers or go into
tournaments, I just play for fun with my friends...
What is the best way to do that? Just play as much as I can?
What books are recommended for an 1100 player?

Los Angeles Open Chess Tournament by

Cunning Chess Players Win!
Are you hopelessly straightforward and trustful? We, the subtle,
convoluted, and bold players of the Exposition Park Chess Club
http://chess.expoparkla.com/] very greatly desire the attendance of
wily chess players.
This coming first Sunday of the month, Dec. 3rd, will be the
occasion of a free, unrated, open, three-round chess tournament. Cash
prizes will...

World champion??? by
EZoto
Overlook a mate in one? I suppose one of those cases where a guy just
crosses moves in his mind and not the board. ...Kg8 is dead equal. I
guess Kramnik played that move in his mind and then oops!!!!

Achieving Your Chess Goals by
John Evans
I just wrote an article on goal setting specifically geared towards chess.
If you have so time give it a read and let me know what you think.
I'm also starting a training regiment that I am going to record on my site.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

"Professional Thinker" co-wrote the Chess Cafe Monthly Special ! by
Mike Murray
I was just reading the blurb advertising Chess Cafe's monthly special.
It's "How to Think in Chess" by IM Jan Przewoznik and Marek Soszynski.
Chess Cafe credentials the latter as a "a trained professional
thinker".
You can't make stuff like this up.

AVRO 1938 anniversary today, 27 November by
Taylor Kingston
Rec.games.chess readers may be interested to know that today marks
the 68th anniversary of the great AVRO tournament, which concluded on
this date in 1938 in Amsterdam, Holland. This was the strongest
tournament ever in chess history to that date, with the world's best
8 players competing: World Champion Alexander Alekhine, former
champions J.R. Capablanca and Max Euwe, future champion...

Probably. Does anyone know what happened to ICC's "anonymous option"? It
would have allowed registered players to play without an ID.

Need a direction by
OOC1992@gmail.com
Chess attracts me, I am so passionate about the game. I can tell you
the history of every piece and master. It is possibly the perfect game,
the best game. I feel so strongly about it. Yet I cannot play myself
out of a paper bag. My abilities fall short of my emotions of the game.
Which makes it even more frustrating. I have played and examined games,
even sponsored my school's chess club (If you...

Jessie Gilbert world ranking by

Does anyone know what ranking Jessie was in the world and Europe at the

I found a reference a few weeks ago but can't find it again.
I am also looking for anything related to Jessie, photographs, film,

I''ve just started a bibliography and have all the national press
stuff, all reports in ChessMoves and BCM, etc. Really interested in
