I returned to the game as an adult after many many years away. My first tournament was a disaster, as expected, but in the past six months I've played seven more tournaments, and my USCF rating has gone from a horrible 978 to a much better 1376. There have been several arguments on here about determining the rating of an absolute beginner at chess, who knows only the moves. The thread 'Improve your chess in 7 days or less' got its name changed to 'Rip-off of Reinfeld', then into 'beginner rating' etc. Rather than change the name again, I thought I'd start a *new* thread. Values of 0, 500 and 1000 have all been mentioned.

My first post on this topic got some good dialogue going and I actually learned about some problems on other chess servers. I hope you like this post as well.
