You could improve the speed of your chess game dramatically towards the start at least by storing the most common moves and your program's responses in a database. As people play, the database could be built up automatically. When you update your chess engine you could just wipe out the database or have a program that plays each of the moves in the DB and updates it. Naturally this would...
