Behind the Robert Tanner Conspiracy by
Don Dooley
If you read Tanner's story, he had befriended several young men over the
years whom Tanner took into his home, and they would go camping together in
the woods and play chess. Tanner would use his position as a tournament
director to create false records of these casual games as if they were
tournaments, and Tanner would reap the benefit in terms of rating points and
"tournament wins."
But what...

Chess set recommendations? by
Mike Christie
A friend's son (16) is learning chess and thoroughly enjoying it, and
I'd like to get him a good quality set of chess pieces for Christmas.
Currently he has an unvarnished, unweighted set of undersized Staunton
pieces. I have never bought a set myself -- I still play with the
antiques my father taught me with -- so I was wondering if people could
recommend a quality set to buy. I don't...

Hi!
Are there any chess engines--for example, Shredder, Hiarcs, Gandalf,
Junior etc--that you can play Fischer Random with?

Chess players to face anti-doping measures by
schmoozes@aol.com
http://www.ng2000.com/news.php?tp=chess
Chess's world governing body will introduce dope testing at the Asian
Games this week, although the sport's top official in Doha said he had
no idea how drugs could enhance chess performance.

What's the state of chess today? by
ajlovesportland@gmail.com
On the one hand, we have embarrassments like Fischer and the latest
bathroom breaks controversy in the big match. And chess--at least in my
country--has labored under the "nerd" class of activities.
But on the other, I see chess books being published in 2006, new
software coming out, thousands of people still playing online...
What do you think is the current state of chess in the world?

endgame position between class B players by
Jud McCranie
Here is a position from a game by two class B players:
White: Kg3, Bh3
Black: Ka5, Rh6, Ph7
Black to move.
The endgame tablebase says Black checkmates in 37 moves. However, it
involves sacing the pawn to get to a won rook versus bishop endgame.
Do you think that a class B player should be able to beat another
class B player over the board in this position?

Hi Sanny by
Michael C
You could improve the speed of your chess game dramatically towards the
start at least by storing the most common moves and your program's responses
in a database. As people play, the database could be built up automatically.
When you update your chess engine you could just wipe out the database or
have a program that plays each of the moves in the DB and updates it.
Naturally this would...

US Chess Trust, a 501c3, refuses to take money from Marcus Roberts by
Sam Sloan
wrote:
I hope that the directors of the US Chess Trust are ready for a
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. The trust refuses to take ANY MONEY FROM ME.
This is not about chess, this is about a bunch of criminals and child
molesters using 501c3 money for their personal gain.
Someobdy might get indicted over this.

Ethics question by
jmc@xisl.com
I'd be grateful for your views on a question which has arisen at our
club.
One of the disasters that can happen in chess (and similarly in other
games) is, say, your queen is en prise and you obviously have to move
it next move. But thinking where to move it to make you think of some
plan in which its new square will assist. You think of a superb plan
but in your haste to execute it forget to...

Beginner Chess Software by
Dr. Dave Regis (remove NO_SPAM)
For some time, I have recommended and used a cracking little programme
called CLUELESS. It's ideal for real beginners who have just learned
the rules, because you could guarantee that they could beat it -- on the
lowest level, it makes moves at random (usually the only merit of the
chosen move is that it is legal).
If you haven't seen it, it's at
Now, the programme is just for DOS, really,...
