Joel Channing Talked a Better Game than He Played
In Joel Channing's final interview, as reported in the New York Times,
he said that since chess is a "zero-sum game" (in that there is always
one winner and one looser) his efforts to make the USCF run like a
business failed.

Read my first Chess Life in 15 years, and... by

....the mag seems the same, though not quite as thick. The production
value is better - a much slicker publication - but it seems like some
of the old columns are gone. The feature articles are longer, though.
Alex Dunne's correspondence chess column seems absent...is
correspondence chess dead? Rendered impossible due to computers?
I see they still print all the tournament life entries,...

Avoiding the Upside-Down Rook: Someone Else Must Have AlreadyInvented this Variant by
Quadibloc
One of the older rules still used in some informal Chess play is that
a Pawn can only be promoted to one of your own pieces that has already
been captured.
The intent of this rule is, of course, to permit Chess to be played
neatly with one ordinary Chess set.
One of the ways chess players have coped with the practical issue is
to use an upside-down Rook to stand for a Queen.

Joel Channing's Threats To Resign by
samsloan
Now, Joel Channing has posted to the USCF Issues Forum a statement
that he resigns effective immediately if the vote to cancel the
"Internet Insurance" passes. The problem with this is that at every
meeting while I was on the board, Channing said that he was
considering resigning. This is clearly part of his bullying tactics,
saying "If you don't do things my way, I am taking my ball and...

Don Schultz defends "Internet Insurance" by
samsloan
Yes the EB approved it but the stakes are now higher - the loss of an
important Board member, who has opportunities in the oven and the fact
that at least one Board member feels that the very existence of the
USCF is at risk because of the potential magnitude of legal
developments. Personally I agree with that assessment. Right or wrong,
Susan's potential marketability is enormous and its...

Suitable time controls on the internet by
KDP[_2_]
While I've always liked and enjoyed chess, I've never been a strong
player. I've found that I tend to freeze up under time pressure so
I've been playing alot of correspondence chess and have improved to
the point where I'm ready to try some live games. I have an account
at FICS and was wondering what type of time controls is appropriate.
5 and 10 minute games are definately out and although I...

I'm having an issue with 'the devil went down to Georgia'. I'm aware of
