Nana Alexandria by Nick
In 'New in Chess' (2006/1), Geurt Gijssen has written a letter in order to set the record straight about how the 1993 match between Nana Alexandria and Susan Polgar came to an end. Geurt Gijssen was the match director. The 1993 match was scheduled for eight games, not including the tie-breaking games. After a total of twelve games, Nana Alexandria and Susan Polgar were still tied. According to...

Anybody knows Shamkovich's book on KIA? by Roberto P-F
Hi there! Does anybody own or knows at least a book by Shamkovich about "Modern King's Indian Attack"? I saw it in Chess4Less, but there is no info whatsoever besides the price. I would like to know the general info, such as year of publication, number of pages, how many games it has, or anything. Also, if any of you has had relevant experience buying from Chess4less and thinks that I must know...

Script to classify ICC games as Bullet, Blitz or Standard by Dave (from the UK)
I've written a small UNIX/Linux shell script that reads from a PGN file containing one or more chess games and adds to the PGN file either: for each game played. So you can search games in a database based on the type of game.

Dortmund end, Kramnik wins by Wilma
That's good to see, Kramnik winning. He may not be back to full strength yet, but I'm glad one of the best GMs isn't out for good. The win is a bit diminished by the fact that there were so few rounds and by the absence of Topolov and Anand and other greats, but it was an important one for him. Besides he did have some good competition I think using tiebreaks is the fairest practical way to...

Terminology "Variation" "Continuation" by mybasename2002-chess
I'm looking for the word that means "a set of chess moves from a particular position". Anybody know the best word to use? "Variation" or "Continuation" seem too specific. I'm looking for a more general term. For example, the term "Variation" can not be used to refer to "a set of chess moves from a particular position" if those moves are part of the main line. So what is the best word to use?

Another Self-Inflicted Wound by parrthenon@cs.com
MY PREDICTION COMING TRUE When the new editor said that Chess Life no longer needs a Q&A column or What's The Best Move? I predicted on this forum that it was just a matter of time before a Q&A column would again appear in the magazine, but this time conducted by GM Joel Benjamin. In the following e-mail Bill Goichberg confirms my prediction.

Gelfand working hard at Dortmund by Larry Tapper
On Wednesday, Gelfand lost in 117 moves against Adams, after putting up heroic resistance in a R+N endgame two pawns down. Now today, in the very next round, he's just beaten Jobava in 113 moves, grinding him down in a difficult Q+P vs. Q endgame. LT

How do most like to have their games timed? by kilowatt@charter.net
To seconds per move would be best. I have played so many games of Blitzin using 2 min start and 12 seconds per move that my game is way too fast, but playing at a higher setting for people that take longer to move would still seem to be the best way to play.
