I also have a pristine Xbox console up for auction ending Monday 21-Aug, which includes - just to keep this posting on topic :-) - the Chessmaster Xbox game. http://tinyurl.com/h3ya4 Thanks in advance for having a look.

CM 10 setup by googlekreider204@spamex.com
I recently bought Chessmaster 10th edition on the cheap, nice program. One thing though: the engine is always running in the background while you play a game. According to the README file, it keeps the engine running for the Mentor functions, apparently even if you're not using the Mentor functions -- it still keeps a running analysis, just for the end of the game comments. The only problem is...

New directives from the USCF Executive Board by Sam Sloan
tanstaafl wrote: These new directions from the EB are not wise. They are simply transparent attempts to silence dissent. The PROBLEM posters have had no shame and have made their identities widely known. The one repeat poster that DIDN'T make his identity known was *ME*. Now you require my USCF ID # before I can post. Especially chilling is that this comes just a couple of days after I hear...

What are the best free correspondence chess websites? by a little bird
Due to a lack of suitable opponents in real life, I've found online correspondence chess to be a great way to practise and improve. You can play many games simultaneously and you don't have to worry about time. I've played at the "big three" correspondence chess sites (GameKnot, Red Hot Pawn and LetsPlayChess), but I no longer play at any of them, for the following reasons: GameKnot...

Donate now by samsloan
I want to thank my Chief Publicist Bill Brock for becoming the first person to donate to my website. Bill Brock hit the "donate now" button and donated $9.95 to my website. For this he is deeply appreciated. Bill has been doing double-duty, first by his campaign to publicize my website and now by donating money to keep it running. Indeed, had it not been for the publicity campaign by Bill...

Teaching Kids - Good to let them win?? by raggio
I have an 8 and 6 year old that are very interested in playing. I've played off and on with them over the years and am conflicted between letting them win and teaching them how to play "the right way". I'm not a very good player, but have read some books and think that I should be able to beat the kids without trying for many years to come ;-). I played a game with my son last night and...

Chronos Blitz II Clock (long) by chipschap@gmail.com
This will appear in my weekly blog entry on Sunday at bungertingbaloner.bobnewell.net, but I thought I would post it here... my unhappy initial experience with the Chronos Blitz II, though I will say that once I got past the events described below, I'm happy with the clock's overall performance. ---- A Turn of the Screw

Minimum time control? by John J.
For various reasons. I'm trying to improve playing shorter than normal games on the Internet. What would be the shortest time control I should practice with which would carry over to regular(long) tournament chess skills? I know 5 minute chess is almost worthless to improve one's game, how about 20min or 30 minutes?

Xylothism by parrthenon@cs.com
XYLOTHIST Taylor Kingston attacked his enemies and praised himself under several bogus screen names which he still hasn't denied. Here is the meaning of Xylothist which is certainly apt in the case of Mr. 2300+ Elo. Xylothism is a disease and psychological disorder derived from the Greek words "xylon" for wood and "othism" for pushing. A xylothist is a derogatory description of...
