The Motley Fool by
help bot
Today I received an email advertisement or newsletter from an
investment
advisor called The Motley Fool. This was probably sent out to many,
many
thousands of people, as these guys have a very popular Web site.
The subject of the ad was, of course, investment advice, but I was a
bit
surprised by the (almost) extensive discussion of chess, and in
particular,

Article on Chess Expertise by
Nick
In 'Scientific American' (August 2006), Philip E. Ross,
a contributing editor, has written an article, 'The Expert
Mind' (pp. 64-71), about the nature of chess expertise.
Philip E. Ross (2053 USCF) is the father of
Laura Ross (2252 USCF).
The article was written for a general audience.
It presents a summary of research (e.g. Adriaan
de Groot's) without making any original claims.
I found nothing...

I sent the following in an email to license-violation AT gnu ..DOTT

it is going to the newsgroups, so relevant people will hopefully check
these newgroups for comments.

winboard by
kilowatt@charter.net
I just downloaded Winboard for XP and I can't find where it put the
files.
I have searched my c: drive for a few of the files and I can't find
them.
I looked for this information in the FAQ and didn't care to spend 20
min hunting for it. No amount of this information is any good for
someone that doesn't have the game installed. You would think this
information would be step 1.

Nana Alexandria by
Nick
In 'New in Chess' (2006/1), Geurt Gijssen has written a letter
in order to set the record straight about how the 1993 match
between Nana Alexandria and Susan Polgar came to an end.
Geurt Gijssen was the match director.
The 1993 match was scheduled for eight games, not
including the tie-breaking games. After a total of twelve
games, Nana Alexandria and Susan Polgar were still tied.
According to...

Anybody knows Shamkovich's book on KIA? by
Roberto P-F
Hi there!
Does anybody own or knows at least a book by Shamkovich about "Modern
King's Indian Attack"? I saw it in Chess4Less, but there is no info
whatsoever besides the price. I would like to know the general info,
such as year of publication, number of pages, how many games it has, or
anything.
Also, if any of you has had relevant experience buying from Chess4less
and thinks that I must know...

Script to classify ICC games as Bullet, Blitz or Standard by
Dave (from the UK)
I've written a small UNIX/Linux shell script that reads from a PGN file
containing one or more chess games and adds to the PGN file either:
for each game played. So you can search games in a database based on the
type of game.

Dortmund end, Kramnik wins by
Wilma
That's good to see, Kramnik winning. He may not be back to full strength
yet, but I'm glad one of the best GMs isn't out for good. The win is a bit
diminished by the fact that there were so few rounds and by the absence of
Topolov and Anand and other greats, but it was an important one for him.
Besides he did have some good competition I think using tiebreaks is the
fairest practical way to...

Terminology "Variation" "Continuation" by
mybasename2002-chess
I'm looking for the word that means "a set of chess moves from a
particular position". Anybody know the best word to use? "Variation"
or "Continuation" seem too specific. I'm looking for a more general
term. For example, the term "Variation" can not be used to refer to
"a set of chess moves from a particular position" if those moves are
part of the main line. So what is the best word to use?
