Sam Sloan - Jail? by John J.
If Sam Sloan would provide a detailed explanation of why he was in jail, lost his Securities license, and lost his Taxi Driver license, I would seriously consider voting for him. Those serious matters need to be cleared up beforehand, though.

Registered Designs for Chessmen by John Townsend
Earlier in this thread, use of the crown symbol on the tops of the King's knight and rook was discussed. I have since learned that Staunton advocated this convention as early as 1841, i.e. eight years before the Cook registration, which incorporated that design feature. See C.P.C. p.139. " ... We throw out this suggestion at random, but have very little doubt that the makers of Chess-men would...

Joel Channing reports on the Zoning Issue by Sam Sloan
Posted: Sat May 27, 2006 2:02 am Zoning of New HQ Bldg I began researching the Crossville land deal at the annual meeting in Phoenix last August. I became concerned when I read a note in the financial report that said that, in the event of a sale of the building, the City has the right to buy back the land for one dollar. When I raised this as a question at one of the sessions I was...

Open Chess Tournament Los Angeles by expochess07@yahoo.com
Cunning Chess Players Win! Are you hopelessly straightforward and trustful? We, the subtle, convoluted, and bold players of the Exposition Park Chess Club http://chess.expoparkla.com/] very greatly desire the attendance of wily chess players. The next first Sunday of the month, June 4th, will be the occasion of a free, unrated, open, three-round chess tournament. Cash prizes will *NOT*...

Conflict between Afghan Delegations to the World Chess Federation by Sam Sloan
Conflict between Afghan Delegations to the World Chess Federation. There is a Congress of the World Chess Federation going on right now in Turin, Italy in the same sporting facility that housed the Winter Olympic Games a few months ago. There are two slates running for the presidency. One slate is known as The Good Guys. The other slate is known as The Bad Guys. Both the Good Guys and the Bad...

Newsgroup Censorship by Rob Mitchell by Sam Sloan
Newsgroup Censorship by Rob Mitchell Rob Mitchell, a regular poster to the chess newsgroups, especially rec.games.chess.politics , has come up with an interesting way to thwart discussion of any topics he finds objectionable: He changes the subject headers, so that anybody who has been following the discussion will not be able to see what happened to it. At first I thought it was happenstance...

Olympiad round 5 report: status quo at the top by OlimpBase
Round five caused no harm in the top of the progress table as all of top teams went to draw each other. Only top teams to take wins are USA who beat Georgia and surprisingly Iran who defeated Vietnam 3-1 to find themselves in tied 5th. The Russia-Armenia was a match of two teams commonly believed to struggle for gold. Vladimir Kramnik hammered rising talent Aronian at top board but the...

Why Wayne Praeder is wrong about Term Limits by Sam Sloan
What Wayne Praeder proposes is exactly the opposite of what we need. What we need is a way to induce the good board members who served in the past to come back and run again. We had some excellent board members back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, men like Fred Gruenberg, John Donaldson and Jerry Hanken. When they were on the board, the USCF was profitable. It was during their terms of...

Why do chess players act so strange? by Zero
How come people who play chess act so weird and strange? I went to a tournament one time in a big hotel; people acted really strange.. I saw players who would slam the pieces down. I don't understand how slamming a piece down makes their move stronger than placing it gently. I saw one player screw the piece into the board as he placed them on their new squares.

Are marble / stone sets too fragile? by mynagirl@gmail.com
My husband and I bought a beautiful chess set in Mexico last week -- marble and soapstone board with 6" matching pieces, not quite staunton but very similar, elongated almost. Gorgeous. We of course had to unpack it to play while we were there then in packing it up to ship 6 of the pieces broke -- one broke just because the piece got knocked over on the board. My question to those of you who...
