Why do chess players act so strange? by Zero
How come people who play chess act so weird and strange? I went to a tournament one time in a big hotel; people acted really strange.. I saw players who would slam the pieces down. I don't understand how slamming a piece down makes their move stronger than placing it gently. I saw one player screw the piece into the board as he placed them on their new squares.

Are marble / stone sets too fragile? by mynagirl@gmail.com
My husband and I bought a beautiful chess set in Mexico last week -- marble and soapstone board with 6" matching pieces, not quite staunton but very similar, elongated almost. Gorgeous. We of course had to unpack it to play while we were there then in packing it up to ship 6 of the pieces broke -- one broke just because the piece got knocked over on the board. My question to those of you who...

Why should I play chess??? by Zero
I went to a chess club again this week. I just don't understand why some players spend time playing in tournaments, reading books, playing online, and studying positions/games, etc. What will I gain by playing chess? Will it make me more intelligent or improve my memory?? I once read that people who practice mental activities will help prevent alzheimer's disease. I think this is the disease...

If someone were to program an exhaustive search of the game of chess, would you be able to assume that black should go for a draw? Is there anything near a proof for this?

Olympiad round 4 report: Russia aiming at scudetto by OlimpBase
Russia are on straight to take first ever double win as both Russian men and women are in control of the action after four rounds of Turin Olympiad. As Zambia and Pakistan late-arrived to appear in the game hall on day four, there are now 148 men's teams in the pool, way more then at any time in the past. The Russians denied China in the top clash of the day to dispell Chinese hopes for the...

New York 1893 by Alan OBrien
Lasker won a tournament in New York in 1893 with a score of +13 =0 -0. He beat Pillsbury http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1109069 in their first encounter. I have seen this described as an 'Impromptu' tournament, and as the Manhattan Chess Club Championship with Lasker playing hors concours. Can anyone tell me what New York 1893 actually was - what type of tournament? Alan

Chess256 by Mats Winther by Mats Winther
A new form of random chess. The opening setup for the pawns is chosen randomly while satisfying the condition that the pawns must be either placed on the second or third rank. There are 256 possible configurations. All of them are sound and balanced, and fully playable. Black's setup mirrors white's. In all other respects this game is the same as orthodox chess. The opening setup for the pieces...

Breaking Headline News - This just came in by Sam Sloan
After careful consideration of the direction of the wind, Beatriz Marinello has decided to come out of the closet! She announced this news to teach the right wing chess fanatics of Schultz, Channing, Goichberg and Tanner a lesson. What lesson would that be? Who the **** knows? I don't think she knows either. She just wants the world not to forget her name. A one hit wonder syndrome? Sam Sloan

"Scorpion Chess" by Mats Winther by Mats Winther
The only difference between "Scorpion Chess" and regular chess is the additional movement directions of the pawn, which is called "Scorpion". The Scorpion has the additional moves of a knight, but only in two forward directions: east-north-east, and west-north-west. There are no additional capture moves. The Scorpion's value is half the value of a knight or bishop, that is, 1.5. This means that a...
