Anti drug testing petition by parrthenon@cs.com
THE FIDE WRECK AND DRUG TESTING The wreck that is FIDE has concluded its General Assembly meeting in Turin, Italy. Drug-testing remains intact and the FIDE medical commission continues to exist. The elections were compounded of outright bribery and gift-giving. One candidate was handing out watches, and we recollect Kirsan's rewarding FIDE politicians with tins of caviar and gold Rolex...

chess viewers? by tdiedwards
Hi all, I'd like to put a chess viewer (as seen in www.mychess.com) onto my website so that my mates can see how bad i am. does anyone know what different viewers are available, and if you can get one which allows annotations of each move, maybe even including arrows drawn on the board? Many thanks, Tim

Larisa Yudina - Never Forget by Duncan Oxley
Please take a moment from this forums usual backbites and brickbats and remember that June 7th is the 8th anniversary of the brutal murder of Larisa Yudina by the henchmen of FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. http://www.eng.yabloko.ru/Hotissues/Society/Yudina/ http://archives.cjr.org/year/98/5/yudina.asp If you look at this last link you will find a wealth of...

Reflections on the Defeat of Bessel Kok by Sam Sloan
Reflections on the Defeat of Bessel Kok Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was re-elected by a vote of 96 to 54, with a record number of 150 nations voting. This was not unexpected. In any election where Rwanda and Seychelles have the same number of votes as Germany and the USA, any candidate willing to cater to the whims of the non-chess playing countries will have the advantage.

Who did these Chess Champions look up too? by Knight1
We all have special old players that we love to play through their games and learn from them. For Fischer I know he looked up to Steinitz and Capablanca, for Kasparov it was mostly Alekhine and Botvinnik, and Alekhine looked up to Lasker. Also as you notice you might disagree with me but Fischer style is very similar to Steinitz and Capablanca, he would turn into Steinitz in the middle game and...

Some Reflections on the 2006 Olympiad by Nick
The Russian teams, for both men and women, were seeded first and did not win the gold medals. The victories by Armenia's men (seeded 3) and Ukraine's women (seeded 2) should be considered mild-to-moderate upsets but far from extremely shocking. Open (Men's) Olympiad: As Armenia's in Asia (geographically), none of the teams (Armenia, China, USA) that won medals came from Europe.

An amazing Olympiad performance! by John J.
In what must be close to a record, the Armenian men's team has lost only 2 games in 10 rounds. That means only 2 losses after 40 games. Amazing. I'll leave it to Taylor to find out if there has been a team with fewer losses...

"The King" by J.H. Donner by Massimiliano Orsi
I have recently bought the book "The King", a collection of columns written by late GM J.H. Donner and recently translated into English by "New In Chess". It is a very interesting reading. On page 33 of this edition, there is the Sep 6, 1958 column from Elseviers Weekblad, where the following statement about Bobby Fischer appears: "During games, he makes a habit of playing a piece and then, when...

Play the player or play the board? by 42N83W
Knowing your opponent and knowing your respective strengths and weaknesses, is it acceptable to play a move (or series of), knowing how your opponent will respond, even though the moves may not be considered the most "correct"? ================================================= The creative act is not the province of remote oracles or rarefied geniuses but a transparent process that is open to...
