Starting to play chess again. Where to start!!?? by chmcd
I haven't played chess for a long time. I started again about a week ago and I'd like to improve. An internet ELO test scored me Class D. I spent hours on the internet looking at book reviews etc, and I'm real confused. Where the He** do I start? I figured I'd first need a general sense of tactics and strategy, but it seems the best idea is to dive right in to a book on openings?

R+2N versus R by Jud McCranie
What is the general result of R+2N versus R? (Nunn's "Secrets of Pawnless Endings" doesn't seem to have it.) Last year my daughter had R+2N versus R+P in a tournament. Rooks were exchanged, and she was in the notorious 2N vs P, which they drew. Of course she should win the pawn and avoid exchanging rooks. --- Replace you know what by j to email

How many... ? by Wlodzimierz Holsztynski (Wlod)
The result of FIDE voting was so predictable that it is hard to call it depressing. And still, it is depressing! Why? Because the chess world is the world in miniature. If it is so hard to make any sense withing the chess world then it feels hopeless for the world at large. (True, the chess politics attracts the political losers, who are unable to succeed in the real life and big politics).

Why should I study endgames?? by Zero
I was beaten by a master this weekend. He told that in order to improve chess players should study endgames. I don't understand why I should study endgames. If I can't get through the middlegame or the opening or am I supposed to get to a endgame? Also I bought a endgame studies book and I don't see the point in going over these studies. None of these positions are ever going to happen in any...

What's a good chess book that doesn't require a chess set while youread...? by Todd Calhoun
I'd like to read some chess books in situations where I can't have a chess set out to follow along. Are there any good books (especially on strategy) that can be fully used without the need for a set? Right now, I'm working on books of chess problems, but I'd like some more instructional books as well. Thanks for any recommendations!

Kind of chess by Jerzy
When I was in Warsaw some time ago I saw two young Vietnamese playing strange kind of chess. I made a picture of it and hosted it here : http://img46.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vietnamesechess6hv.jpg It`s probably not Shogi (Japanese chess) because of different board and pieces. When I asked them if it was Chinese chess they couldn`t answer me because they didn`t know the language or maybe...

Chess Families by jeremy.p.spinrad@vanderbilt.edu
The topic of families of chess players comes up from time to time, but I hae never seen one question considered. What family can claim the largest number of consecutive generations as serious chess player? Some ground rules for my version of the question 1) A family can pass down its chess playing from parent to parent, or from parent to niece or nephew (eg Ernest Morphy = Paul Morphy) 2) It...
