The etymology of "Chigorin"? by Wlodzimierz Holsztynski (Wlod)
Does name "Chigorin", as a word, have a meaning? If not then what was the origin of this name? Just for starters let me try two-three naive possibilities, so that the linguists can explain how implausible are such amateur attempts.

Biggest News of the year! by Ray Gordon
I admit that I'm gay. Please don't hold it against me because I decided to come out off the closet. That explains why I'm always bitter toward women. Now you know the truth. Ray Gordon

Watching the US Championships reminds me by John J.
of how much better the Masters are with the openings than the under 2000ELO crowd. Sure, they are better at tactics but I just saw a complete dismanteling of a club player's Alekine Opening without breaking a sweat. Then again, the Master I'm talking about has opted for gaining material instead of going for the mate.

New newsgroup for debates? by Jud McCranie
Could a new newsgroup rec.games.chess.debate or rec.games.chess.opinion be created and keep the fighting, big debates, and other junk over there instead of here? Under rec.music.audio there is rec.music.audio.opinion, and most of the fighting stays in there. --- Replace you know what by j to email

"solitaire chess" or "the key to chess improvement???" by harmless64@gmail.com
I've been using Chessbase 9 lately on training mode (where the program hides the remaining moves), looking at GM games. First I go through the opening moves. Then I try to guess the moves that follow, as though I were playing the game myself. I am a uscf ~2000 player, and believe it or not, I guess accurately nearly 70% of the time. If asked before my "study," I probably would have thought I was...

Chess in Africa by Nick
GM Nigel Short's making a chess exhibition tour of Africa. http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1715931,00.html "It was obvious that these (African) chess lovers hardly ever came across an IM, let alone a famous grandmaster. They were thrilled at the opportunity to try to thrash me at blitz chess and to quiz me about people and events they had only read about. What does FIDE do for such small...

The Mongolian Chess lady bags another GM in US Championship by John J.
Today she defeated GM Julio Becerra(2629), her strongest victim yet.. Chess in Mongolia must be big. :) Batchimeg Tuvshintugs, rating 2208, has defeated 3 GM's out of her 4 games so far! Here victims we Alexander Fishbein (2515) and Boris Kreiman (2479) and, of course, Julio Becerra, whom I met personally a few weeks ago. Ratings are FIDE.

How many active chess players are there in the world? by Tom Eriksen
I read an article in a local newspaper where they wrote that some of the athletes in the ongoing winter olympics, represented pure micro-sports. Some of them, like the biathlon, only have 1600 active athletes worldwide. We have soccer clubs in Norway with far more members than that. Another example; there are only 13 bobsleigh facilities in the entire world. So I started to wonder how many...

East Asian GMs by Nick
This thread's creation was motivated in part by the recent discussion of a Mongolian WIM's success so far in the 2006 US Championship. This thread's heading was motivated by an interest not to discuss the GMs in India, Bangladesh, etc. in this thread. No slight is intended toward these South Asian GMs. It should be fairly well-known that there are GMs in China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Indonesia,...

Hihipedia biography of Sam Sloan, by me by Wlodzimierz Holsztynski (Wlod)
Hihipedia biography of Sam Sloan, by me ================================ Sam Sloan will be extremely happy about this biography. Indeed, the 95% of his life effort goes into his self-promotion, while the remaining 5% into promoting his children. While uthers are concerned with chess or organized chess life or chess history, Sam Sloan uses these causes to

Sam Sloan IS the fake poster to help Schultz by Ray Gordon
I'm sure that Sam Sloan is this fake poster. He just wants attention to himself. He also wants to help Schultz bring everyone to Nolanland. That's why Nolan allows him to attack everybody at the USCF forum. It all makes sense now. Ray Gordon

From the Grigory Levenfish's autobiography by Wlodzimierz Holsztynski (Wlod)
Levenfish didn't provide the date of his birth in his autobiography "Selected Games and reminiscences". From other sources we know that he was born in 1889, and died in 1961. I used to have the Encyclopedic Dictionary in Russian (published in the USSR; editor was Geiler, I think--his brother lived in Warsaw). Perhaps the Russian encyclopedia has more
