Ozgood Z'beard by
Alan OBrien
When someone has a beard people don't say, "He has a beard and a moustache."
But if you are like those Quakers in Moby Dick, people might say, "He has a
beard but there ain't no moustache!"
And Poirot always says "moustaches". Does that mean there is a moustache
either side of the hollow where fairies sleep?

Mouse-slip term by
Alan OBrien
Black rooks d8 and d2
White rook d1
White plays Rd1xd2; I made the non-refundable mouse-slip ...Rd8-d3.
What is the problem term for that non-capturing movement of a line-piece
towards a similar opposing line-piece?

Giving Queen odds is an advantage by
petergregorychapman@hotmail.com
I'm trying to recall the details of a story that I read about a patzer
on a train who challenged a stranger to a game of chess. The patzer
offered the stranger Queen odds. After the stranger had easily
defeated the patzer (much to the patzer's astonishment) he suggested
that they play again, this time offering the patzer Queen odds. The
stranger deliberately lost, and afterwards suggested that...

Chess in New Yorker fiction by
pauldepstein@att.net
This link is to the latest New Yorker story in which chess features
prominently.
Such links don't remain active for long so: If it's long after the
posting date, don't be surprised if nothing turns up. Also, if you
intend to read it later, copy-paste it into a permanent form.

Deep fritz 8 vs Fritz 8 Deluxe vs Fritz Champion Edition by
TallSurgeon
I'm a long time ago pre-computer age chess player who is coming back to the game and I am serious about maximizing my skills.
I cannot find any information about which product suites my needs the best: Deep fritz 8 vs Fritz 8 Deluxe vs Fritz Champion Edition.
Can anyone point to me a resource that describes the differences. Or offer a detailed explanation.
Thanks,
Dr. Lou

Theoretical books on prophylaxis by
knucmo
Hello again all, I am enquiring as to whether there are any actual
books by Chess GM's on the art of prophylaxis. I've noticed that in
my own play I try to frustrate and wait for my opponent to make
mistakes, especially when they are aggressive. Of course I am no
master of it but I reckon the best way to improve practice will be to
improve theory. Its an element of the game I am interested in ...

Goran's music career! by
Niemand
"When I was young I often listened country music. My favourite song
was "Hunging tree". -- Goran Tomic, 8 August 2005
Goran's too modest to mention it, but he had quite an impressive
music career of his own. To see one of his best videos, go to:

assuming an air of moral authority and calling someone else a thief.
