We all know Kasparov is still a world-class blitz player but is hisopening play a strength or a weakness? by Paul
I've been debating this point with Phil Innes who says that Kasparov's particular strength is in the opening. I said that, on the contrary, his opening play is a weakness and that he's good in spite of this. He then said that GMs agree with him. Well, Caruana agrees with me. This is what Caruana said: "He’s still a very strong player. I don’t think that really came as a surprise to...

List of Authors Banned or Blacklisted by USCF Sales by Sam Sloan
I have posted on Wikipedia a List of Authors Banned or Blacklisted by USCF Sales. It is a very distinguished list, which many authors would aspire to be on. However, the list is undoubtedly incomplete. I would welcome any additions to the list. For example, I am not sure whether Bobby Fischer is on the list or not. Here is the...

Lasker Schlechter +2 clause. by Offramp
This is a note, in fine print, at http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=54100 "Since the final conditions for the match have never been published, there are rumors that Schlechter had to win the match by a score of +2 to become world champion. A +2 clause existed in the conditions issued by both players on 3 December 1908 (Wiener Schachzeitung, December 1908, p. 376. In ANNO /...

Touch Move Rule in Chinese Chess by samsloan
In the last round of the World Championship of Xiangqi in Munich, Germany in 2015 I made a horrific blunder. In a winning position, I moved a rook off my back rank, allowing my opponent a simple back rank mate with his cannon.. I realized I had made this mistake as soon as I made the move, but as my fingers had left the piece it was too late so instead I stared blankly at the board hoping that my...

Hou Yifan -- Nigel Short prize money? by Paul
Does anyone know the prize money for the ongoing Hou -- Short match? Thanks. I don't know how to assess the first game. Should Hou be pleased for drawing with Black, or should Short be pleased for having an edge for most of the game? It depends how close Short came to winning, I suppose. Paul

Millionaire chess by Paul
Why did the Millionaire Chess event not attract the elite like Carlsen, Caruana, Karjakin, So, Nakamura etc? (Yes, I know I'm probably leaving some out, and maybe putting the names in an unfortunate order but that's not my point.) I would have thought that the quality of the players is determined by the prize money (which was huge). So why did the elite stay away? Thanks,

Paul Truong of Cambodia made member of FIDE media body by samsloan
Paul Truong of Cambodia made member of FIDE media body BAKU, AZERBAIJAN 13 September 2016 Paul Truong of Cambodia made member of FIDE media body When FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos read out a list of FIDE political appointments on September 12, I was surprised to hear the name of Paul Truong of Cambodia being made a member of a FIDE media body. First I thought it must be another Paul...

Somebody Finally Said Something Nice About Chess Players by Quadibloc
Well, perhaps that's exaggerating a little, but https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/09/160913124722.htm is still one of the most positive things I've heard about people who play chess in general for a long time. Finally, evidence supporting one of the positive stereotypes about the game. John Savard

My Experience at ICC by Radrook
My experience at The Internet Chess club has been strange.. Having reached 1997 standard rating approx. 20 years ago, I expected to move higher not lower. However, suddenly and inexplicably the all the opponents I encountered began playing like experts and masters regardless of rating. This dropped me to the 1700range for many years. Then again suddenly and inexplicably all opponents,...

1)...e6 by Philidor
If instead I keep my 1)...e6 I'm fairly happy with the French which I've only started playing in the last year. But I'm still somewhat skeptical of the Dutch, having almost always crushed it as white. So I'm still tinkering with what to do vs d4. The Lenningrad is ruled out via the 1)...e6 move order. And I like the idea of avoiding all the specialists in 2)Bg5 (my own preference when playing...

1)...d6 by Philidor
What do you think of 1)...d6 versus e4? I used it in the past vs d4 and was successful with that. However I eventually stopped using it except now and then in blitz because I didn't much care for the Pirc positions arising after 1)d4,d6 2)e4, Nf6 3)Nc3 (or plenty of other third moves for that matter),g6. However it seems that the modern way of getting into the Philidor might be ok based on...

Effect of computer cheating scandals on blitz chess by Paul
It occurs to me that it would be far more difficult to computer-cheat at blitz chess (for example 3 mins for each side per game + an extra two seconds per move) than under conventional time limits. Firstly, players stay seated at the board, and secondly most cheating methods would seem to take way too much time to work in blitz. As more and more cheating scandals are uncovered, is that likely to...

Construction problem by Paul
Can anyone give me a position where a player who would be a DMP underdog can double out the opponent? If all the on-roll player's wins are gammons and the losses are all single then the take point is 50% if recube vig is ignored. However, the possibility of backgammons could give a take point of more than 50% if the backgammons factor is more important than the recube vig. I think I've asked...

Brilliant finish by Carlsen against So in Paris blitz by Paul
See the diagram puzzle in https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/20/wesley-so-well-placed-to-clinch-grand-tour-after-sinquefield-cup-win "What should he play?" is an unfortunate and unflattering question. I was sure it meant that Carlsen had missed the win. The question should be rather "What did he play?" Impressive, to say the least, to solve this OTB at blitz. Paul

World Championship of Chinese Chess, Round 8 in Munich Germany by samsloan
World Championship of Chinese Chess, Round 8 in Munich Germany I lost two games to Japanese players. In round 8 I faced a German player. It proved to be an exciting though flawed game. My opponent played some weak moves in the opening and I gained the advantage. However, somehow I lost the thread and he got back into the game. At the end he started trying to win. However, he overlooked a tricky...
