A Grudge Match Proposal: Marinello - Goichberg by Sam Sloan
On 9 Aug 2005 15:29:38 GMT, (Jeremy Spinrad) wrote: This seems to have all the elements for a good grudge match. Crossville makes headlines by parrthenon@cs.com
Meth labs, a toxic threat to rural America. One small town grapples with scourge of addiction. "Along a country road on the Cumblerand Plateau" begins a NBC story, and one suddenly realizes that the story is about Cross-to-Bear, a.k.a Crossville. There is a sheriff with the wonderful name of Butch Burgess -- looks just like Rod Steiger from In the Heat of the Night -- and there is the good...

Debunking the "ICC Fischer" Myth by Ray Gordon
If I recall correctly (if not please correct me), I'm told that when one of the people who spout this "legend" gave his story, he said that he played Fischer as a guest on ICC, but that Fischer kept adding time to his clock. Doesn't ICC require one to be a member to use this feature? Did they require it in 2001, when the games allegedly took place?

New FIDE fiasco by Taylor Kingston
An official FIDE site at http://tinyurl.com/7jprk purports to give the "History of the World Chess Championships," proclaiming "Since 1886, worldwide chess has produced an important story of passionate matches among top line players. Each of these is detailed as follows." The error-riddled table then given is yet another glaring example of the ineptitude and disrespect with which FIDE treats...

ChessWise.com Super Course is now free by Chesswise
In 1997, Chesswise.com launched it's "Super Course" of interactive lessons featuring Grandmasters Maurice Ashley and Michael Rohde. The course has grown and features over 20 hours of audio lectures (supported by a Java Chessboard). We also have quizzes, straight lessons in html, and even full length "exams". For years we've charged $39.95 for a six month membership. We've now made the course...

Bobby Fischer by Peter van der Hoog
Meanwhile, Fischer seems to be adjusting well to life in Iceland. He frequently goes to an antiquarian bookstore and has been seen sipping beer at local bar. He has not played chess, but he did give a lecture on the world chess championships between Russian masters Kasparov and Karpov, which he claims were fixed. The audience did not embrace those claims, but grandmaster Jóhann Hjartarson,...

Global Statistics by ian burton
I received the following note from a friend who's taking up chess once again. "Does somebody somewhere keep statistics on grandmaster games? For example, if I wanted to know what percentage of GM games started d4 in recent years (and I do, I do), would that number be available some place?" Can someone here suggest a site? The ChessBase database site doesn't seem to have an option for...

Nagasaki Day by Niemand
Sam Sloan wrote: Today services are being held because this is the 60th Aniversary of the day my Uncle Alden dropped the bomb on Nagasaki. My uncle was a B-29 Pilot who flew 30 bombing missions over Japan and who was a pilot in support aircraft when the A-Bomb was dropped. If your uncle was not even in the plane carrying the A-bomb, in what sense can he reasonably be said to have...

On 9 Aug 2005 02:35:47 -0700, wrote: Just as a point of information. The Ulster Chess Union has split from the Irish Chess Union. This seems to have been mainly a financial break. Does anyone know if the UCU is allowed to join FIDE as a seperate chess organisation representing northern ireland? No. They will not be allowed to join.

Parr's 1985 review of the OCTC by Taylor Kingston
In another thread I posted several questions for Larry Parr regarding his 1985 review of "The Oxford Companion to Chess." Parr has so far not seen, or chose not to answer, the questions. Therefore I now put them in a separate thread, in hopes he will reply: wrote: I never called the Oxford Companion "pro-Soviet." But you did write: "But there is another color to this...

European Team Championship history 1957-2005 by OlimpBase
The European Team Championship has long, almost 50 year old history and most of European top players, including chess legends like Botvinnik, Tal, Spassky, Karpov and Kasparov, took part. With lots of memorable moments and plenty of good chess the ETC certainly deserves its place in the history. Unfortunately nothing like that has ever been done before. This is why we decided to fill the gap....
