Kasparov as a Martyr: Garnering Political Points?
By Lev Khariton
When I expressed my worries about Kasparov's physical survival in my
postings at www.chesspro.ru most of the respondents were just trying to
laugh me off. Are they really that indifferent about the life and
health of their beloved champion? Why are they so cool when Kasparov,
fighting,so to speak, for the democratic future of...

Sloan's repertoire of misconceptions by
Taylor Kingston
Sam Sloan wrote:
If you have read Dante's Inferno, you will know that there is a

That means that there is a special place in Hell for persons who try

Sam, since the Sicilian is a defense to 1.e4, and the Queen's...

Best way to get back in? by
Aodhan
Hey all-
I was a player (Albeit a somewhat non-studious one) that dropped out of
the game a few years ago. My high rating was in the low-mid 1400's (I
think 1435ish).
I finally have more time, and I would like to start getting back
seriously into chess. What would be the best way to start, what
equipment/books/computers would you consider essential, and any
openings that you would recommend?

Lev Khariton:Is Kasparov Playing for the Fourth Result? by
SveLeo@aol.com
Is Kasparov Playing for the Fourth Result?
By Lev Khariton
In chess there is an expression "to play for three results", that is
when the position is totally unclear only thre results may happen - a
draw, a win or a loss.
Kasparov seems to be playing for "the fourth result", a total
kharakiri. Today he was badly beaten by Moscow's policemen when he came
to a political meeting in defense of the...

Here it is. The smoking gun. by

The memo that has "IMPEACH HIM" written all over it.
The top-level government memo marked "SECRET AND STRICTLY PERSONAL",
dated eight months before Bush sent us into Iraq, following a closed
meeting with the President, reads, "Military action was now seen as
inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action
justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the...

A new lead for Goran Tomic? by
Taylor Kingston
Goran, knowing of your crusade against masked communists and other
evil-doers, I thought this might be of interest:
http://www.worldchessnetwork.c=ADom/English/chessNews/evans/040=AD329.php.
Could this be another case of Western collaboration with the
notorious KGB agent Averbakh? Please investigate and report back to us.

TIME Article - Did Chess Make Fischer Crazy ?? by
Chess One
I agree with Taylor and Nick.
This is just another example of Fischer exploitation. If the subject of
Time's article had been Morphy or Steinitz I doubt it would have got past
the editor.
Did tennis make McEnroe crazy? Shouting 'faggot' during televised matches in
front of millions of viewers is something Fischer never did. Fischer is a
dissident voice politically, and also a dissonant voice...

Simple, stupid question by
Jaco van Niekerk
These may be a very simple questions, but I am not 100% sure of the answers,
I'm around 99.5% sure ;-)
1. When your rook is under attack, are you allowed to castle? I think the
answer is no, is that correct?
2. If you do not have mating material, say only a king and you "win" on
time, it is considered a draw is it not?
Regards
Jaco

This Second in Chess on Sofia Round 6 by
PeteCasso
Topalov vs Anand started off as a quiet Nimzo-Indian with Bb7, but then
Topalov played Ng5 and Nxf7 not unlike what we poor hotshots sometimes do
when we feel overconfident and play to overrun a patzer. But that "patzer"
happens to be Anand!
Oy, this game is so captivating, the other games have to wait for the next
second!

Kasparov's Political Gamble

Let's get things straight, guys!
Even if you take me to the gallows I would never support the return to

Then, I am not Kasparov's enemy, and I am not bearing any grudge
against him.
Those who support his involvement in politics, and more particularly,

Perhaps GM chess with Sofia rules not too drawish by
fizzy
Since I started the "high-level chess too drawish" thread and was
accused in another thread of being a troll, I thought I'd start this
thread admitting, after the last two rounds in Sofia, that I might have
been wrong. With the anti-short-draws rules in place in Sofia, the
last 5 out of 6 games have been decisive. With 7 out of 18 games now
having been decisive, it's starting to approach a...
