Are we now back to the days of low wage for Chess Professionals? by
linux4u@consultant.com
Thanks to Fischer there came Big Money to Professional Chess. Karpov,
Kortchnoi,
Kasparov, Short, Anand, & Kramnik were able to benefit from it. Now
with
Kasparov gone will any of the remaining Chess Professionals be able to
draw such
high wages.
I for one don't think so, however I know that this remains to be seen?

Chess Puzzles - March 15th by

Here are some puzzles taken from the chess games of strong players at
the Cappelle la Grande tournament in February. Except where noted, it's
"White to Move and Win".

Chess and Insanity by
Jeremy Spinrad
My research in 19th century chess has led me reluctantly to the belief that the
incidence of insanity among great chess players is much higher than that in the
general population. This leads to a number of questions, such as
1) Is my conclusion correct, or am I overestimating the incidence of insanity in
chessplayers and/or underestimating the incidence in the general population?
2) If so, what...

submitting USCF tournament online by
Zero
Can the USCF offer a way for affiliate to send money to pay a deposit.
Instead of continually paying with a credit card, can affiliate send
money and have to stored as a credit which can be used to pay for
events/memberships. It is just saves time and hassle having to
re-enter credit card info and making sure the TDs don't have to deal
with another expense.
Just a suggestion.

No real successor to Kasparov for a long time by
Alberich@somewhere.com
I was saddened to hear that Kasparov has announced his retirement. I
can't say I am that surprised to hear this...but actually reading
about what he said...makes it all the more sad...because we won't see
the likes of a Kasparov for a very long time.
I think it was Kasparov who mentions in his My Great Predeccessor
seires that it takes 5 world champions before a really new approach to
the game...

The Day After by
PeteCasso
The chess web sites on the net seems to be stuck for 24 hours. The laudatio
on TWIC and the documentary on Chessbase are excellent, but apart from THE
news, nothing else, anywhere.
Also outside of chess circles, THE news gets noticed, just do a Google on
Kasparov.
Wow, Kasparov does matter, for chess and outside of chess.

Fischer to sue Japan govt if not freed from captivity by Friday by
banana
Any journalists reading this, why aren't you hassling the Japanese
Ministry of Justice and Immigration Bureau to explain why they are
holding without trial this stateless refugee, who HAS BEEN GRANTED
RESIDENCE BY ICELAND, and who HAS HIS PLANE TICKET WAITING FOR HIM.
He has not awaiting trial in Japan, on a charge of having committed any
offence. No country has entered an extradition request....

TSIC This Second in Chess on Linares Round 13 and more! by
PeteCasso
Today, March 9, is Fischer's birthday. Best wishes for Fischer, particularly
considering his current predicament!
"Fischer was THE most dominant chess world champion EVER." ... Garry
Kasparov.
This is not a hyperbole, but supported by the research of Jeff Sonas, the
world-leading expert on chess ratings. Moreover, the man who said that is
one of the most dominating chess world champion himself,...

Lev Khariton: Leko et al. must be barred from Linares next year! by

Leko et al. must be barred from Linares next year!
By Lev Khariton
Look at the two positions that happened today, on March 6, 2005. These
are the final positions from the games between Leko and Topalov () and
Valljeho - Adams(You can find them at any chess site) Incredible! Are
these positions drawish? Most unikely. But the top-notch grandmasters
probably know better...
What should be said is...

CT Art 3 or Chess Tactics for Intermediate Players? by
Ron
So, after the rave reviews CT-Art has gotten from so many people, and
deciding that my tactics really do need a lot of work, I was all ready
to buy it... then I saw Convekta's Chess Tactics for Intermediate
Players.
It's hard to tell how to compare these two programs from what I've seen
online. Anybody have experience with both and want to help explain the
differences?
Thanks.

Who saw Kasparov's retirement coming? by
raylopez99
I saw it, as a classic mid-life crisis as well as nothing left to
prove, when Kasparov showed his frustration with the Turkish FIDE match
and cancelled it. At that time I was criticized for pointing out
Kasparov was a bit rash (justifiably rash, but rash nevertheless).
Question for the second guessers: who saw Kasparov's retirement coming?
Topolov says he had heard rumors so it must have been...

The Fictional Chess Cup by

Your vision is very clear. FIDE members would see this as a failure to

Human+AI vs AI+AI by
Debil Nebyl
I wonder if someone has done a reasonably scientific experiment
by letting a decent human chess player use a strong chess program
in a match against another copy of this very same chess program.
In particular, I'd like to know if, say, a 2400 GM using a 2400 AI
is able to gain strong advantage against the AI. To make the match
more fair, the resources for the opponent AI could be doubled, so
as...
