Let's hear it for Karpov too! (Greatest ever list) by
raylopez99
It takes two to tango. If Kasparov is the greatest ever, as widely
believed, then Karpov must have also been good to draw him and play so
close (see the excellent Seiriwan book "Five Crowns").
Best ever:
1. Kasparov
2. Fischer
3. Capablanca

Go is vastly better than chess by
Luigi Caselli

Go is far more subtle than chess, and a much more satisfying game to
play.
If only it didn't have such a gay name.
So we can call it StronGo... it's really a powerful name... :-)

Query about check by
google@philipbryant.co.uk
We have started to play chess at my local pub. In a game last night I
put my oponent in check. He then moved his queen to put me in check
whilst he was still in a check position and claimed this was legal.
I have looked through the rules of chess and the Fide 3.9 rule states
"no piece can be moved that will expose it'sown king to check or leave
it's own king in check".
My interpretation is...

Cheese Championship in Milwaukee by
David Ames
According to the crawl on Headline News, there is a cheese championship
in Milwaukee today with a thousand entries. I didn't catch whether it
was a U.S. Chsmpionship or otherwise. Does someone know?
(If you think this is off topic, I must respond that I once did a
search on "chess" and got responses on "cheese." So there.)

$6.00! So I thought, Yeah right, this must be a scam,but...

FIDE and physics by
David Richerby
While looking at the FIDE website to check the exact laws of chess for
another posting here, I noticed the following oddity.
The image
http://www.fide.com/img/fbanners/spin.gif
appears in several places on the FIDE website. It consists of a rotating
globe and a picture of a knight. But look more closely. In the initial
position, you see part of the globe. After one full rotation of the

Well I drove Kasparov into retirement! by
Ray Gordon
Sure, I start training again and Garry bails out on me, just as I was
beginning to prepare to dethrone him in ten years. Wuss.
He's whining about all the WORK he has to do to stay on top. Sounds almost
like anyone can jump in at any age now if they are willing to do the work,
since all the theory is updated so rapidly.
Poor Garry, so distracted and lazy. As the hardest working chessplayer...

'Japan Today' on stateless Fischer's possible deportation to US by
banana
I'm afraid the following is a very bad article, for two reasons.
First, the title is not true. The Japanese government has not said that
it "will" deport Fischer to the US. (One might suggest that US embassy
media guys have been doing a bit of work in the past few hours).
Second, it is not clear whether the Japanese Immigration Bureau is
contradicting itself, or the journalist who wrote the...
