Convekta CD on Alekhine--- disappointing! by
Nomen Nescio
I hoped that the game annotations on Convekta's "World Champion
Alekhine" CD would be an intelligent compilation of past analyses,
with an occasional worthwhile new insight, but cursory examination
suggests this is not the case.
(1) The rook ending in game 27 of Alekhine's 1935 match with Euwe
has received a lot of attention, including in Alekhine's "Best
Games 1924-1937." Key issues seem to be...

when does improveyourchess.com start? by
Don't Spam Me
I got an email from chesspublishing.com (I'm a former subscriber) about
http://www.improveyourchess.com/
It's supposed to open Feb 2005, but it's already Feb 2005. Anybody from
the staff know what date it'll actually be up and running?
btw, I don't know how these titled players make comments abouot this
site, since it's not open yet. I don't know if they're testimonials
(probably not) or if...

Too many draws! by
fizzy
Chess is still seriously plagued by draws at the top level. Something
like 70% or more of the games in the A group at Corus have been draws.
Can you imagine a professional sport where 70% of the games are draws?
It would quickly die from lack of interest. Chess survives because of
its long-standing tradition, but even chess lovers like myself are
starting to lose patience with watching draw...

WTB: Russian Encyclopaedia of Modern Chess Openings by
Dan-the-K
At a Brighton Beach, NY Russian bookstore, I picked up vol. 1 (Open
Games) of this series. I was so impressed with it that I found vol. 2
(Semi-Open games). I would like the volumes on Sicilian and on Closed
Games.
This is the Russian version, not the Yugoslavian version. If it helps,
the Sicilian volume has ISBM of 5-89437-002-7; the Closed Games (don't
know how many volumes) has ISBM of...

What is a Beinschach? by
Jeremy Spinrad
The Wiener Zeitung, July 3 1886, lists the prizes for a Bavarian chess congress.
Third prize for Nebenturnier 2 (there is 1 Hauptturnier, then 2 Nebenturnier;
this is the least of the 3 tournaments) is a Beinschach. What the heck is this?
I can only understand leg chess; perhaps the term for a pocket chess set?

Stephen, you're doing wonderful job!
One item: I think that Maurice Ashley
was awarded the Grand Master title
already for years ago.

Hi there! by
ChrisC
I don't seem to be able to select pieces from the board design menu.
It's just letter pieces. Any ideas?
Thanks.
