The actual amount stolen by Richard Peterson is about $30,500. When Eric Hicks took over as Editor of The California Chess Journal, from Frisco Del Rosario, the magazine went from a bi-monthly publication to...

Asylum for Fischer in the Czech Republic? by PeteCasso
A Czech association of Jazz artists under Karel Srp has petitioned Czech president Vaclav Klaus to grant Fischer asylum in the Czech Republic, for reasons of 'support for independent democracy' and 'fair play'. http://www.chessbase.de (in German) The 'Free Fischer' movement is not only growing globally, but also growing beyond the chess community.

Open Letter to CalChess by Sam Sloan
Dear Elizabeth Shaughnessy, The old CalChess bylaws state, Section 4: Voting Members. Any member in good standing, 14 years or older, may vote in CalChess elections. Yet this year, in your effort to be reelected, you acted to prevent hundreds of voting members from being able to vote.

teaching chess to middle school children by the Big E
I have been asked to lead a "chess exploratory" for middle school children. I am a volunteer, and not a teacher by training. Has anyone out there taught chess to children aged 11-14? The children will all know the basic rules and how the pieces move. My question is, where to go from there. Chess history?

no url in Pehme's article on Fischer in CF by Tommy Malloy
In this article the author makes reference to Fisher's web site, but does not bother to include the url. This strikes me as an extremely poor editorial policy. All references should be fully documented.

booklist for beginning juniors by Elijah
Howdy! I'll be teaching a once a week class of beginner junior chess players (ages 4-12) and I wanted to come up with a optional booklist for them. I thought I could put them on levels: read the books on this level first and then go on to the next level, cycling thru tactits, strategy, endgame, game collections, and openings. I came up with a partial list, I wonder if anyone who has worked...
