Symmetrical Fischer Random Chess by SchemingMind
Hi, Kramnick (Chess Life, June 2004), has made an interesting point about Fischer Random Chess, regarding the lack of aesthetic balance of random starting arrays when compared with the familiar RNBQKBNR. Kramnick may well have a point (and who am I to argue?), however playing FRC should be a valuable learning experience for developing chess players because of the opportunity it offers to avoid...

India's first International Super GM Tournament by PeteCasso
should begin in the next few hours with live games http://www.chessindia.org/pune/ Anand is not there, but India's #2 Sasikiran is there, Kasimdzhanov is there, and an interesting mix of other players, category 16. I hope for the sake of the planned Kasparov-Kasimdzhanov match that Kasimdzhanov will do a LOT better than in the recent tournament in the Netherlands. The bids for the match will...

Computer program for drawing flowchart of opening moves and branches? by Sonja Kisa
I would like to create a chart that maps out, like a tree, various branches to an opening. I can print out the visually easy-to-follow diagram and take it with me when I practice without a computer. Basically as I learn a new opening and learn different ways it can go, I can practise and prepare myself by knowing what I like to answer to various moves my opponent might make. Any suggestions? Or...

Using Icarus to connect to ICC via a proxy server by J Hall
The Icarus interface is supposed to connect through a proxy server. My problem is that I need to set explicitly the port number for the connection to be port number 80. It seems that I cannot change the port number from the default value of 5000/23. I've gotten Yahoo Messenger to work flawlessly though the proxy server but the Yahoo software exlicitly asked for a port number (80) to use with the...

My simul game with V. Akobian by Bob Newell
I've had a number of requests from people here to post this game; it was in a simul against IGM V. Akobian, played outdoors on the Santa Fe Plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the end of August. I was a bit reluctant as my lack of skill will show! But what the heck - I did hold on for 43 moves and over 4 hours. I hadn't played a "serious" game in over 30 years. Fritz 8 comments in brackets,...

Mike Goodall Reports on the CalChess Meeting today by Sam Sloan
I just came from the General Membership Meeting of Calchess. Elizabeth Shaughnessy was re-elected President. The new treasurer is Richard Koepcke. Richard Peterson did not show up. The actual amount stolen by Richard Peterson is about $30,500. When Eric Hicks took over as Editor of The California Chess Journal, from Frisco Del Rosario, the magazine went from a bi-monthly publication to...
