Rubinstein wins, Smyslov draws by
Alan OBrien
What are the two games in which a nearly identical position is reached,
except that the colours are reversed, but in which Rubinstein won and
Smyslove repeated position and drew?

US Open....? by
Rrb828
What happened with the US Open? I know it was down in Florida, but I only saw a
couple of games covered on ICC and haven't really heard a thing about it, or
any of the results...Am I missing something? Seems like one of the stronger
events in the US (at least for the US) would get at least a little press
somewhere.

Fritz 5.32 by
John Townsend
For the last few years I have been happily using Fritz 5.32 running under
Windows 98. Just in the past few days I have been getting the following
error message shortly after setting up a position and asking Fritz to do
"Correspondence Chess" analysis:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If
the problem persists, contact the program vendor".
The only thing I...

Best humans now worse than best computers? by
PeteCasso
A team of humans will play a team of computers, see
http://www.ajedrezbilbao.com/FestivalEN.htm
Remarkable is that the humans are planned to have white against the
computers in all games.

Seeking contemporary Fine statements on withdrawal from 1948 WCh by
Mig
There are two conventional wisdoms about Reuben Fine's withdrawal from
the 1948 match-tournament world championship. The first is that he was
busy with his PhD work, hadn't been playing much, realized he wouldn't
do well, and decided to skip it. The other is that he thought the
Soviet players would rig it to guarantee one of them would win.

Chess alphabet -- the second letter, S by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
Until relatively recently, the leading
chess letter was "S". Just imagine a K-S
match. "K" would be a favorite, but
"S" would have a good fighting chance.
Here are the S-heros:
Stamma, Staunton, Shen,
Steinitz, Spielmann, Sultan Khan,
Smyslov, Spassky, Stein, Shirov

Well, no prizes for guessing which side the UK authorities are on.
Here's the latest blurb from the UK State broadcasting agency, namely

chess alphabet -- third letter: B by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
Is it Bourdonnais or Labourdonnais? Big difference :-)
Here they come:
Bourdonnais, Bogolubov,
Botvinnik, Boleslavsky, Bronstein
Then there was the woman world champion Bykova;
Berliner used to be the chess correspondence
world champion at one time;

Meek vs Fuller New York 1857 by
Jerry Spinrad
Sorry if this is sent a second time.
I am wondering about the Meek Fuller series in the 1st round of New York 1857.
The sources I have give only 4 games; Meek is white in all 4, and each wins 2.
Was there a 5th game or a forfeit, and does anyone have access to the score?
Thanks for any help.

Zero point for draws? by
Karl Thoroddsen
Has the proposal of awarding points only for wins in tournaments even
been discussed? It would certainly lower the number of grandmaster
draws in tournaments and even if you draw in a hard fought game you
still get zero points as a point would only be given if you *defeat*
your opponent.

Some players just don't know when to resign.... by

This is the rough chess equivalent of what the Bills did when they came back
from being down 35-0 at the half to the Oilers.
Following is the game score. White is 14 years old, and Black is a former
world champion:

Book Recommendation Sought by
dan foley
A co-worker of mine has shown interest in my chess books and has asked
me for a book recommendation. after many years of collecting chess
books, I find that all mine are opening/strategy books that
pre-suppose a lot of knowledge about the game. My friend basically
knows the rules and I've taught him to read algebraic notation -
that's about it.
Can anyone recommend a good starting instructional...

Fischer appeals 'non-refugee' decisn; threat of illegal deportn today by
banana
This is the latest release from the Committee to Free Bobby Fischer.
The bottom line is that Fischer has appealed against the decision to
deny him refugee status, but officials have nonetheless threatened to
deport him to the US today.
Deportation today would be illegal, because he has a right to have his
appeal heard. (Even if someone doesn't appeal, they are supposed to be
allowed seven days...

Advanced chess books (middlegame & tactics & psychology) by
PHR
Anyone have any ideas for good "advanced chess books"? I am rated a
little over 1900 and enjoy going through multitudes of game
collections, but I'm looking for something a little different. I've
been through "Reassess Your Chess" (Silman), "The Middle-Game in
Chess" (Znosko-Borovsky), "Judgement and Planning in Chess" (Euwe),
"Art of Attack" (Vukovic), "Pawn Structure Chess" (Soltis), and...

What kind of chess box is this? by
ELC
If you could please take a look at this:
http://allenbeys.powerfulhosting.com/products/full/9132.jpg
This is a Jaques oak chess set. The board, I think, is attached to
the case and sort of swivels out or unfolds from the box in an unusual
way. I was just curious if there was a special/common name for this
type of set.
I am trying to find a replacement for a friend, and I wanted to look
around...

disgusting player at the USOPEN (Florida) by
Florida Chess
I witnessed an absolutely disgusting player at the USOPEN:
He was a senior player with all sorts of open wounds on his arms
He constantly picked his teeth (with both hands) and then would touch
the pieces leaving fragments of decaying food/flesh on the pieces and
board
Next he would belch constantly with no effort to stop himself and just
being a spectator many feet away I could smell a very...
