Staunton Memorial by
Jon Levitt
Dear folks,
A website for the Staunton memorial, starting next week, is now up. It is
anticipated that the games will be available every day, but not live.
http://www.jlevitt.dircon.co.uk/staunton/
and there is a link from my front page (first link below).
Cheers,

Tony Pabon of California by
Sam Sloan
I just noticed that Tony Pabon received two write-in votes from
California in the USCF Executive Board Election.
http://www.uschess.org/2004resultseb-del.php
I knew Tony Pabon in either 1956 or 1957. I only met him one time but
the meeting was memorable. He came to the Lynchburg Chess Club with
his friend, Peter Kerr. I was almost the only person at the club,
which was held in the Virginian...

More Fraud Don't Bother Me by
Sam Sloan
The key sentence to this letter is where it says:
"The USCF agreed, through various channels, including Mr. Sabine, the
Mayor, the Governor's Office, and Mrs. Alexander, to approve and
provide an approximate number of jobs, and, eventually, a significant
amount of tax revenue, to the City in exchange for the City's
conveyance of real property to the USCF along with, and not
insignificantly, an...

Tournament Food Suggestions by
My name is Mac, not Spam
Not many years ago, typical tournament fair for me was a pack of cigs, about
half a liter of Coca Cola, and a snickers bar. That's what got me through
each game. Yes, I am still alive, but I am not entirely sure why.
Anyway, it's been some time since I've played in a tournament, in which
duration I've quit smoking, started working to lose weight, and in general
begun taking better care of...

Chess Puzzles - August 15th by
W T Harvey
Here are some puzzles taken from the chess games of strong players of
the early 20th century. Except where noted, it's "White to Move and
Win".

The best move? by
Alan OBrien

I think the best move is 16. Nxe4. However, some people think the best
move may vary depending on the position of the pieces on the board. Of
course, if the move is actually 16. Nxe4++ then there can be no argument.
I like 15...Ne5.

RJF was given the IM title in 1958, duly backdated to 1957,

board 4, just behind Bronstein.

Bush & The Bonfire (of vanity) ot.. by
NoMoreChess
..
My guess is that Mickey Adams' point was the multitude of off-topic postings
which very frequently relate to Ameican politics (Bush), etc.
To an Australian, these postings are not merely off-topic, but irrelevant and
annoying too, I expect.
G'day mates.

13 year-old girl wins Hong Kong championship by

Not junior or women's title, either. Love the reference to
Judit Polgar winning the Hungarian championship in 1960!!
Given the fact that Judit Polgar was born in 1976, her *reported* victory
in 1960 might well be evidence of her supernatural precocity in chess. :-)

And I am always searching for new links. Perhaps someone of you know
some other WWW-pages which I can put in my link-collection?

Boris Spassky vs Robert James Fischer by
kentusha
Hi-ya
I am struggling to see which was the poisoned pawn in :
Boris Spassky vs Robert James Fischer
Reykjavik WCh 1972 · Sicilian, Najdorf (B97) · 1-0
I read: Fishcer took an exposed pawn with his bishop, which was
trapped after his opponent's next move. But when I replay the game,
bobby never takes a pawn with a bishop. Either I am wrong or blind.
