Is this a Rule? by Kevo
I was playing battle chess for NES and i thought i had finaly won after an arduous battle. I had his king trapped with my castle and queen on his starting square. Instead of saying checkmate nad playing the death song, it said that he had won. Is there some rule that says if the king is on his square when you checkmate him he wins?

Looking for analysis of Leko - Kramnik match by OBF
I am looking for analyses (on the web) of the games in the Leko - Kramnik match. The Week in Chess mini-site (http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/event/kramlek04/intro.html) has some very basic stuff, but nothing in depth really. Anybody have any suggestions?

Youngest grandmasters by tchow@lsa.umich.edu
At http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=1614 there is a list of people who achieved the grandmaster title at very young ages. It struck me that the ages are reported in the form, "X years, Y months, and Z days." Strictly speaking this isn't the "right" way to rank people by age, since not all years have the same number of days and not all months have the same number of days. If we...

I Was Tortured In Pasadena - Fischer by Jerome Bibuld
Dear "oharamd", Heil Dubya! In the 1930s, "Mrs. Wilson", who taught elementary school (P. S. 106Q) tried to impress on "her" children -- including this sixth grader -- the "greatness" of the U. S. A., by pointing out that, although identification cards of some sort were required of citizens in other parts of the world, we in the United States could walk around without carrying such demeaning...

Paintings by chessplayers by Jeremy Spinrad
I am studying the lives of chess players of the 19th century, many of which are in my opinion quite interesting. However, I am absolutely incapable of evaluating artistic merit of works by chess players who are artists by profession. Is there anyone with the interest and knowledge to discuss this intelligently? Some of the artists from the time period I study (and I don't know how many...

Training by cheating by xy
I like to play on-line chess, blitz 3 0. Playing blitz does not improve my play, I play bad openings and even worse middle games and endings. Some months ago I downloaded ChessVU, which has the capability to analyse in parallel the log file generated by ICS Clients like Chessbd. I created an opening book with almost 500K games from Chess Informant CDs, and downloaded several chess engines (Yace...

Full point bye - elect half point? by Jud McCranie
If the pairings go up and you are given a full point bye for a round, can you elect to take a half point bye (or perhaps 0) instead? Is it fair? Here's the scenario - it has happened twice this year to my daughter in scholastic tournaments (the second time was today). Both times she lost the first two rounds and got the full point bye the third round. That means that she plays opponents with...

Encouragement Please by fs
I rarely play online but when I do, I play blitz on Gameknot. But tonight I was bored and for some reason I thought I'd visit Yahoo. To my horror, I lost 4 games against 1200(Yahoo) players. :_( I just started playing this year, but I hoped I was better than that! I beat the U1400 county champion in a rapid at the club last week! This was my last Yahoo game (I'm black): 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 {I...

Lev Khariton: Three Men in a Boat by Aryeh Davidoff
Three Men In A Boat By Lev Khariton Strangely, this week has brought back into the focus of the chess world the three persons who authored and signed the notorious Prague Accords, which, as we can certainly say without hesitation today, failed to reunite the chess world. Those persons are Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Garry Kasparov and Yasser Seirawan. Garry made a keynote speech at the Annual Baltic...
