Spassky : unbelievable .. ! by
Claus van de Vlierd
Unfortunately and sadly enough it seems to be true that
a) Spassky seems to like to talk antisemitic nonsense as he did this
time in an interview of
"New in Chess Magazine 5/2004" , just recently (around July , 20.,
2004) published.
b) the "NIC-Magazine" (Editor in Chief : Jan Timman !) was willing to
print such rubbish.

Patriotism has no rational basis? by
DDEckerslyke
As my playchess/ICC thread was hijacked for other, darker purposes I'd
like to start a separate thread.
Complete the following sentence in ten words or less
Being proud of your country is like being proud of ...
I once heard the idea that a flag should be replaced by a picture of
your mum and dad having sex. This seems to sum it up nicely.

Reminiscing Fischer's past (Part II) by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
There is a common believe that "geniuses" are
prone to early death (including suicide), or
to "craziness". One would need solid statistics
to support such a view (first one would have to
decide who is and who is not a "genius", or one
would have to classify the geniuses and the
talented people on a scale from 10 to 100 say,
and then one would try to get a correlation).
While general dramatic...

8 X 10 pictures of all the chess champions by
Twistocereus
At the chess emporium store in Phoenix they used to have (maybe still
do) pictures of all the chess champions (8" X 10" or so, if memory
serves) hanging on the wall. I think the older ones (Steinitz, for
example) were drawings, but very nice. All were head shots.
I did a net search but didn't find anything. Would anyone out there
know if/where these I can buy copies?

Bourdonnais-Deschappeles-John Cochrane + ... by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
They played 7 games each against another in
Paris, in 1921. Deschappeles was giving the
other two odds: 1 pawn and two moves.
Bourdonnais and Cochrane played on even terms.
Bourdonnais won both matches, and Despachelles
won against Cochrane.
"The Oxford Companion..." (2nd edition) claims
that the score of Bourdonnais against Deschappeles
was 6:1 and against Cochrane 7:0 on page 56, but

Anand wins Dortmund by

Also Svidler won in the rapid games against Leko, Svidler and Leko are

"Nice" precursor to the Kramnik-Leko match in September, it will be a match
between Dortmund's second and fourth. I bet the organizer would have loved

Fischer may seek asylum in Japan (Reuters) by

One of the great eccentrics of the chess world, Fischer maintains
that his passport was never properly revoked and that the action was
taken retroactively, his supporters say.
Fischer could be a 'great eccentric', or the most 'normal'
burger-munching TV-watcher in the world - this doesn't make the
slightest bit of difference to the FACT that his landing rights were
revoked...

Telegraph Chess by

According to "The Oxford Companion to Chess", the first electric telegraph
match was in 1844 between Washington and Baltimore.
In April 1845, on the other side of the Atlantic, Staunton and Kennedy went
to Gosport and took on a team of 5 or 6 opponents in London. The
illustration on p. 348 depicts Staunton standing and Kennedy seated, two
toppers on the table, and two telegraph operators, one...
