Fischer and Chessbase by
EZoto[_3_]
Was reading the latest article about Fischer. Just looking at the
pictures of him in his last months makes you wish the pictures
equalled the inside but they didn't. However I can imagine that it
would have looked this way if he had chosen another path in life. The
article is sad though and again it is about his money. But for a
moment I can see a Fischer in there who was a World Chess...

Fischer's obituary in Newsweek by
parrthenon@cs.com
FOR HIM, THE GAME WAS EVERYTHING
Bobby Fischer, 64, chess master.
He became a grandmaster at age 15 and a cold-war hero at 29, when he
dethroned the Soviet world champion Boris Spassky in a storied 1972
match. Soon after, though, Fischer, a temptestuous personality,
withdrew from the public eye. Following two decades of seclusion, he
emerged briefly in 1992, defying an executive order by...

Mr Phit beat Easy Level. by
Sanny
Easy Level plays better than Beginner Level. But look at this game Mr
Pill took so many pawns of Easy Level as if Easy was playing wrong
moves.
Was Easy really playing the wrong moves or it was Played because of
some Mate Threath.

A novel chess-like strategy game by
Amir Michail
Hi,
The game works like this:
* as in chess, each player gets 16 pieces placed in the same two rows
on each side on an 8x8 board
* every piece starts out with a "1" on it
* you can think of each "1" piece as a king; once you lose all of your

Hopper Chess & Gunnery Chess by
M Winther
"Hopper Chess"
In Hopper Chess the objective is checkmate. Normal chess
rules apply except for the following. Any piece (not pawn)
situated in front of any friendly piece (including pawns) can
use the latter as a springboard for hopping over an enemy
pawn standing on the same file, provided that there are no
pieces in between. The piece lands immediately behind the
enemy pawn. Note that the King...

Deadly Handshake by
J.D. Walker
Dear Chess Friends,
Suppose you come to the tournament room one day, check your pairings,
and go to your board only to discover that your opponent, with obvious
symptoms of the bubonic plague, is extending his hand in your direction.
What will you do. An extreme example, you say? Sure, but it is
extreme to make a point.
Disease agents are continually changing, mutating and spreading. ...

In defense of chess variants by
M Winther
"In defense of chess as a party game"
Chess during the medieval era was a very popular parlour game,
especially among the upper classes. But by the turn of the seventeenth
century it was no longer fashionable. Marilyn Yalom says:
"Ironically enough, it may be that the elevation of the chess queen
and the bishop to new levels of strength had something to do with the
dwindling numbers of female...

Is a handshake really a big deal? by
Alex
I don't understand why you have shake hands with your opponent before
you play a rated FIDE game?? Also, Topalov and Kramnik did not shake
hands before their game and there was no protest.
Does that mean if I play in the world open or other FIDE rated event
in the USA, can I complain to the TD if my opponent refuses to shake
my hand before or after the game???

Free Speech by
J.D. Walker
Dear Chess Friends,
Can anyone tell me how FIDE regulates individual expression in
tournaments? Here is an example: suppose that a free thinker from
Holland came to play in a FIDE tournament and wore a T-shirt with a
picture of Mohammed with a lit bomb in his turban. How do FIDE rules apply?

Medieval chess by
M Winther
The game of Shatranj (the Persian or Arab predecessor of modern Chess)
is still played widely in the Middle East and is far from being a dead
game. Indeed, Shatranj is the normal form of chess played in Arab
countries and Iran.
In Europe, during a large part of the medieval era, chess was played
according to Shatranj rules. The pawn can only move one step. The
queen (general) can only step one...
