Scientists discover new, rare disease by NoMoreChess
.. It has long been known that overdoing practically anything can often lead to negative consequences, and a new study has confirmed that in at least one recorded instance, the over-consumption of certain types of fungi (or "magic mushrooms," as they are commonly called) has lead to a classic case of troll-paranoia, as shown in the following quote-lets, taken at random from google archives of one...

Here you can read on Kalmykia and its president Ilyum(d)zhinov : http://english.pravda.ru/main/18/88/351/13074_Ilyumdzhinov.html The beginning of the article is related directly to chess : President of Kalmyk autonomous republic Kirsan Ilyumdzhinov is telling the Kremlin that if Moscow dismisses him, there will be the second Chechnya in Kalmykia.Meanwhile, in republic"s capital Elista...

New Chess Ladder Freeware almost ready for testing by Curtis Thetford
A while back I decided to start messing around with Visual Studio .NET and in looking for a project to work on, I decided to tackle a program for managing a simple chess club ladder. My intent is to release the initial version of the software as freeware. I have pretty much finished what I'm working on and need a few folks (probably 4-6) that are interested in helping me test the program. At...

Unbeliavable!!!! by Sepi
I find these two games to be extremely rare in the sense that these are equal from move 1 to the end. 46 moves!!!. What is the possibility mathematically?

Betting line on Kramnik-Leko by Ray Gordon
Pinnacle Sports has Kramnik at -108 (lay 108 to win 100), and Leko at -102 (lay -102 to win 100). That's a house "hold" of 5 percent. -- Everything you need to know about women. FREE! http://www.cybersheet.com/library.html The Seduction Library

Learn openings by Matthew
I have seen advice around that beginners study the opening to much. So, I have intentionally put more weight on studying tactics and the endgame. My rating has gone up to 1500, and I think I am loosing games because of not knowing the opening. A friend recommended Nunn's Chess Openings. I purchased it, but it seems to be a bit monotonous. I don't have any friends my level in chess nearby...

Chess gift for 12th birthday [UK] by Gregory
My nephew here in the UK is a very enthusiastic chess player, and I want to give him a chess-related present for his 12th birthday. He already has chess sets, chess books, chess computers, chess programs, a subscription to a chess magazine, and he's even got the new DVD "Game Over" about Kasparov vs. the computer. I'd really like to give him something special, or at least usual, up to about £50...

ICC Ratings Question by Ian Hurley
I recently lost several games to 2 different players, and in both cases I felt that although our ratings were similar, their play was significantly stronger. On checking their ratings, I noticed that both had recently had much much higher ratings. Player 1 - currently rated in the high 1800s, but only last year had a blitz rating of almost 2600

Banning Players by Sam Sloan
On 11 Jun 2004 10:34:57 GMT, (WPraeder) wrote: As you correctly indicate the organizer can easily ban anybody that they want through other mechanisms. Then again what's the fuss as permanent banning without due process or blacklisting just doesn't happen or is not a problem. The reason for the fuss is that you, Wayne Praeder, have wasted our time including 57 postings up to...

Monrad System? by MMan37x
I'm trying to find out the details of the Monrad system of tournament pairing. Googling just seems to bring up software packages that implement it, and complaints about "getting Black too often." Is there a site that actually explains the details of how the system works? M Man

Armenia vs Rest of the World Match by Chess One
Anand won his game against Lputian with flawless endgame technique, after controlling the initiative throughout. As did Gary, with a very nice piece sac finish against van Wely in an almost-phantasy position. And as Svidler did against Gelfand, who, perhaps for no good reason other than acclimatising to the board, resigned only after the game was long gone. Akopian coudn't make any impression...

Copyrighting Of Chess Games Inevitable by Ray Gordon
If some are to be believed, it is perfectly legal to log someone's games on ICC, publish them as a collection, use the names of the players, and make money. I seriously doubt a court would agree with that. Even if there is no copyright violation per se, it's a clear violation of the player's right to publicity and to control who cashes in on his names.
