Will Bauer replace Hanke as VP of Finance? by
Sam Sloan
Will Bauer replace Hanke as VP of Finance?
Randy Bauer has just been elected to the USCF Executive Board and will
take office next month. Bauer is the Budget Director of the State of
Iowa and is eminently well qualified to be the USCF VP of Finance. He
is also a master chess player.
Tim Hanke is the current VP of Finance. He has no qualifications for
the job. He got the position by being the...

Knight's Tour Variant Solver? by
Curious
Hi list,
Does anyone know of a utility that can solve specific knights tour
problems? For instance a Knight's Tour problem that dictates that
after a certain number of moves you must be on a certain square?
I am trying to solve a problem whereby you start in the top right
corner of the board and you are given 5 points that you much arrive at
after a certain number of moves, and in that order...

Solora - chess clock : where to find one .. ?! by
Claus van de Vlierd
Hello ,
anyone around who sells a "Solora" - Chess clock ?! (Swiss product ;
often used in the 60ies - e.g.
in the WC - matches "Petrosian - Spassky 1966 / 69" -- it is a tiny
wooden clock based on a
broad stable foot ; geometrically it is shaped rather "roundly" -
without 90-degrees-angles).
any hint would be appreciated !

re. R Fischer -any relevant provns in Japan-US extradition pact?? by
banana
Am I right in thinking that the Japan-US extradition treaty of 1980
stipulates that extradition from one country to the other is only
possible when a person is accused of something that is a crime in both
countries, and that carries at least a one-year prison sentence?
If this is so, was it a crime under Japanese law for a Japanese citizen
to play chess for prize money in Serbia in 1992, even...

Lev Khariton: Bobby, we are with you! by
Aryeh Davidoff
Bobby, we are with you!
By Lev Khariton
On receiving the sad news about Bobby Fischer’s detention at the
Tokyo airport I was shocked. But I was not surprised.Bobby has been
targeted for years, and if anyone is to blame for all that happened
two days ago, it is unquestionably and primarily us, the chess
players. We have remained passive and indifferent to the destiny of
the man who...

Kramnik demoralized today? by
PeteCasso
After almost losing to Karjakin yesterday, Kramnik played a listless game vs
Bologan today, not quite a GM draw, but it was Bologan (the lower rated
player with black against the world champ!) who tried to induce
complications while Kramnik was steering toward simplifications, very unlike
his energetic attempts in his game vs Leko in round 2.
But also Karjakin drew after only a little hanky...

Chess Piece and Chess Board Proportions by
Barry Simon
Regulations exist, some are specific and some (somewhat)vague in
respect to sizing chess sets to boards. Most guidelines have to do
with tournament play Staunton style sets with kings ranging in height
between 3.375" to 4.5" (85 mm to 115 mm). Regulations go on to say
that a king's base diameter should be between 40 to 50% the height of
the piece and that other pieces should give the set a...

The P Syndrome by
PeteCasso
Super-Pono lost a 3rd time in Biel, this time in a good manoevering game
against the lowest ranking Pelletier, the two will be swapping 3rd and 4th
places in the standings.
Morozevich captured Sasikiran's Queen in a hilarious manner after the latter
overpressed in seeking complications, which in itself may be a bad idea
against the complication magician himself.
