Teaching chess in elementry school by
Michael
Hi,
I've volunteered to teach chess in grades 3 - 5. I did a little bit
last spring, but it was hit-or-miss on the organization of the material.
Anyone with some advice on curriculum--topics, order of topics, depth of
topic, etc--please pass it along.

New artistic Chess sets by
Geneffects
I just designed the web page for some local artists (in North
Carolina) who make artistic chess sets. I think they're pretty cool.
Check them out:

message for Goran Tomic by
Michael Sayers
Greetings to Goran Tomic,
After reviewing your posted games, and the considerable doscourse as
to if you are (or, are not) an alter ego of Robert James Fischer, I
would be honoured to engage you for a game in which the moves are
posted to this forum.
For my part, I plan to ignore the kibbitzers.
Feel free to take the White pieces, and post your opening move.

Chess FM? by
Fjx1
An e mail from ICC stated that they will bring ChessFM back. Is this true? I
doubt it would be the same. No response on e mails to Tony Rook so it probably
wouldn't include him.. But, will it exist again?

Lev Khariton: Tripoli, the wrong choice by

Lev Khariton: Tripoli, the wrong choice
As it has been announced, FIDE is planning to stage
the World Championship in Tripoli, Lybia startingon
June 18th.Today I have read the protest of the
Association of Chess Professionals (ACP) signed by GM
J.Lautier to the effect that Israeli players will not
be allowed to participate in the event.
Really, this is a flagrant violation of the FIDE
principle...

Chess Urban legends by
Pete Watts
Games like Chess seem to attract myths like any other human activity.
One of these is the idea that Chess has been "solved" - i.e. the
result known if both sides play perfectly.
Others I have come across:
Checkers is solved as win for white. Undoubtedly false, as Checkers
strategy books are still on sale.
"Suicide" chess solved as win for white. Almost certainly false also,

GM Carlsen by
Harry Haller
I see it mentioned that Magnus Carlsen is the second youngest player to make
the GM title (at 13). Who was younger - Kasparov?
Any general thoughts on this almost frighteningly early developed player?
Apparently Kasparov's former trainer says he has not seen anyone this young
so good, besides Kasparov himself. I went through a few of his games
published in The Times today - thoroughly...

Can anyone comment on this clock? by

Bayonet attack vs. King's Indian Defense by
Ivan
Why do people say that the Bayonet attack (early b4) is so strong
against King's Indian Defense:
1. d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5
Ne7 9.b4
White is just attacking on the queenside and all he is getting is
material. But Black is counterattacking on the kingside and aiming at
the white's king's throat!!!

I have recently started playing on playchess and am very confused.
In one game my opponent had king and a knight and I had
king and pawn. My opponent refused a draw offer and I sat and
let my time run out. My opponent was awarded the win !!!!!.
even without any mating material.
The server also awards an automatic draw for 3 fold repetition.
According to the rules of chess this needs claiming.

Low Income Chess Club Looking For Supplies by
Mike
My name is Michael Cohen and I am the chess coach and a Social Studies
teacher at Westridge Middle School in Orlando Florida. Westridge
Middle School is a Title-I school which means that over 75% of our
students are on a free or nearly free lunch program(very low income).
2003-2004 was the first year I began an afterschool chess program at
Westridge and I was amazed by the response. Within the...

Req: info on Celtic Story with Chess players in it.
A few years ago I read a web page of extracts
from a Pre-Christian Book from Ireland
I am after the name to search for to look for it again please?
The chapter I am after was with a Army less king up a tree
and the king below agreeing to play a chess game with the stranded
kings with his head as prize.
The when the outnumbered king made a...

World Open Major by
Roman M. Parparov
I have a question, especially for the BCF members.
This year, the inaugural World Open Major Championship will occur in
Scarborough, UK, in August. I understand this is some kind of amateur
World Ch., but I would like to learn more about it, because I want to
advertise it in Israel and I want to know what kind of circular to
send to the clubs. I read that the British CF is the organizer, but...

Newspaper chess columns by titled players by
Miriling
Unless I am mistaken, there are very few newspaper chess columns in the USA
written by internationally titled players. The best-known ones are the
following:
New York Times - GM Robert Byrne
Washington Post - GM Lubomir Kavalek
Boston Globe - GM Patrick Wolff (co-columnist)
Los Angeles Times - IM Jack Peters
With the exception of the Boston Globe (which has two columns per week), the
