Houston Area Chess by
BriMarErn
Is there any chess activity (indoor or outdoor) inside the 610 Beltway of
Houston, TX? It seems as if everything is outside "the loop". ( Woodlands,
SugarLand,etc.)
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Sam Sloan's 500 Words Candidates Statement (This is not final. I will
finalize it tomorrow.)
The USCF was founded in 1939. For 60 long years, the federation
struggled, often on the brink of collapse. Finally, however, the USCF
reached its peak in 1999. In that year, it had $6.5 million in sales,
more than 90,000 members and a reserve of $2 million.
At that point, the federation insiders decided...

OT: Cell Phones for Soldiers by
Matt Nemmers
A really great idea! Mega props to those kids in Mass-of-two-****s.
http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/
Undoubtedly Ol' Jerry Bibuld and his conspiracy friends will pooh-pooh the
idea of supporting Uncle Sam's "hired assasins" and "murderers," but I'm
gonna donate and I encourage everyone to do the same.

Derren Brown - Plays 8(9) Chess Masters Simultaneously by
oxtut
Derren Brown the UK "Mind Control" showman - a sort of British David
Blaine,
performed this totally obvious and very old trick where he "won" a
simul against 8 top UK players (including Hodgson, Ward and Emms) and
one weak club player.
The trick was just that half of the masters played Black and half
White so he just played them off against each other and then beat the
9th weak club player in...

Missing April 2004 Chess Life by
Mogath3
I emailed the USCF telling them that I didn't get my April 2004 issue of Chess
Life about 3 days ago. Does anyone know how long it will be before they reply?
I had to go out and buy it so I didn't miss it. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Jeff

Chess novels? by
Harry Haller
Can anyone recommend quality/classical novels involving the game of chess,
and chess players? (Besides Nabokov's wonderful "The Luzhin Defense" of
course.) Great non-fiction reads on chess are also of interest.

1972 PBS Fischer-Spassky coverage by
KJL
Does anyone know if the 1972 Fischer-Spassky world championship
coverage that PBS aired can be found anywhere? I looked on the PBS
website, but I couldn't find anything there, and they don't respond to
inquiries about programs aired before 1994. Also internet searches
have info about the PBS show, but nothing about if you can get your
hands on it.
Any info is appreciated...

Queen vs. knight - draw or win ? by
Dr. David Kirkby
I draw a game of chess on ICC (45 0) which I *think* I should have
won, although it ended in a draw.
I had a queen at the end, my opponent a knight. For a long time I was
trying unsucessfully to checkmate my opponent, but each time I tried,
his knight got in the way. I was eventually running low on time (I had
about one minute, my opponent 38 mins), and managed to get my queen
and king falked by...

Travel to Hungary in 1950? by
David Ames
Does someone in soc.culture.magyar know if travel to Hungary was
officially banned by the U.S. State Department in 1950? In a chess
newsgroup we have a question whether the U.S. Grandmaster Samuel
Reshevsky was forbidden to participate in a tournament in Budapest, or
whether it was his own decision not to go.

USCF ratings is slow....... by
Doctor Who
Why is it taking the USCF so long to update their ratings? If the
USCF so understaffed, does it take a genius to figure out that they
need to hire people? Maybe that is what all those USCF committee
discuss all day...If this Sam Sloan guy were in charge, maybe
everything would be better.

Bravo to Sam! by
Eric Hicks
Did you guys ever realize what an asset Sam is to this board and to US
chess in general?
He is a bonefied villain.
He is easy to attack, bites back, and posts tons of chess gossip and
info to counter and argue against.
He makes this group interesting.
