Chess History article by
J. Franklin Campbell
I have just posted an article by chess historian Neil Brennen. Read
"The Champion of the North: James Jellett's Adventures in American
Chess". This article describes some of the players in Minnesota during
the early 1800's. Imagine a player being insulted because another
player insists on playing from an even starting position. He was
offended his opponent wouldn't accept odds. Of course,...

Most useful endings to study. by
Dr. David Kirkby
What are the most useful endings to study in chess? My rating on ICC
is ~1350. I recently drew a game when I had a queen vs a knight, which
I now know was winable. However, it is very hard to win against best
play, and as someone has pointed out, it's probably not worth worrying
about, as its of little practical value.
Hence I'm wondering in what order should I study chess endings. I have
no...

Newbie looking for texts by
Lawrence Szenes-Strauss
Hi all,
I've only recently become interested in chess, probably as an
outgrowth of my fiancée's family's penchant for board games. (Mostly
Scrabble and the like. Fun, but sometimes I get frustrated with the
fact that, for no reason but chance, one player can end up with a
useless hand while the other is putting "quixotic" on a triple word
score.)
I learned the rules of the game when I was in...

Lev Khariton: Point of No Return by

Lev Khariton:Point of No Return
(200 Words, www.pakchess.com)
It is not without interest that I read almost daily various articles,
mail, etc. regarding the future of the World Championship, who the
next World Champion will be…Characteristically, in one of his
recent interviews, Viktor Korchnoi, many-time challenger for the World
Title said that he has nothing against having several World...

ACP vs FIDE by
MC
IMHO, with 110 players out of 128 signing the Players' Undertaking it is
becoming obvious that the ACP has no pull, and that, contrary to the ACP's
motto ("Injustice done to one is a threat to all.") when it comes to the
bottom line, players care far more about their own personal aspirations than
the common good of chess and fellow chess players.

GM Toni Thaler Rest of World Match by
Tryfon Gavriel
Hi all
I am happy to announce that International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster
Master Toni Thaler has agreed to play a Rest of world match on
chessworld.net. This is a voting game where the "Rest of the World" (ROW)
votes for the moves against the master, and the highest voted move played
after five days. Kasparov played a ROW game a few years back.
Toni has played correspondence chess...

Reti's languages? by
MMan37x
There is this quote from Tartakover:
"Reti studies mathematics although he is not a dry mathematician;
represents Vienna without being Viennese; was born in old Hungary yet
he does not know Hungarian; speaks uncommonly rapidly only in order to
act all the more maturely and deliberately; and will become the best
chessplayer without, however, becoming world champion. "
OK, so Reti didn't speak...

opening question by
levellerman
I can not find the solution for white's strategy to counter
1.d4-e5 2.de5-Nc6 3.Nf3-Nge7(?!)...
if 4.Nc3-Ng6 5.Ng5-Ne7 6.Ne7-Qe7 7.Nd5-Qd8 followed by 0-0 and Re8 and black
takes back at e5 and gets equality...
Any clue ?
Thanks

Exchange French. by
EZoto
You don't see this opening that much in the tournament circuit but on
ICC and FICS you see it almost all the time. Why? Against the
Sicilian you always see the c3 sicilian. Against the Ruy Lopez it is
becoming the exchange. Maybe the ICC and FICS is become much better
against computer cheats but now with white it is against the
databases. Maybe a caro-khan against e4, or modern or even...

Non-smoking home too. Selling because I no longer play chess. E-mail me at
,or post here, if you are interested in any, or all,
of these. Feel free...
