Help me find a particular match by Hegemony Cricket
Okay, this is a long shot. I'm wondering if anyone can help me track down a particular chess match I read in a book one time. It features one of my favorite Extremely Clever moves ever, but I only partially remember it. The board setup was something like this, with black pieces in lower case and white in upper case: 8 .....rk. 7 .....ppp 6 ..N..... 5 ......q.

Translate a story on the Duke of Brunswick? by Jeremy Spinrad
The Duke of Brunswick, famous as Morphy's opponent, was also famously bizarre (I wrote a short article on him at one point). I believe there is a story on him in Der Humorist, June 15, 1843 (again available though http://anno.onb.ac.at). As I understand it, he and his fellow defendants were being sued for 5000 pounds damages as a result of throwing rotten apples etc at a play? Seems quite odd,...

Scam Spam Boasts of Stealing Photographs by Jerome Bibuld
Heil Dubya! If Scam Spam uses ANY of my photographs -- no matter where published -- he will find himself sued. This is a promise, as well as a threat. ALL of my published photographs -- among them hard copy and internet -- are published subject to a license contract between the publisher and me. NO ONE ELSE (and, in the case of Scam Spam, NOTHING ELSE) has permission to use the results of...

Just started playing on playchess.com by jb
Just wondering, do people use computers to show opening book moves during a game? either to show suggested moves or just show percentages after the fact? Is either legal/common practice? Just curious, I keep getting waxed. If I can make it through the opening I can do well. other times I cant defend a guy from cleaning me out with his queen. It says I'm 1290 now but I've only played a few rated...

Book Recommendation: good explanations of nomenclature by Chess Watcher
I'm looking for recommendations of books that are good at explaining specific nomenclature, especially in the openings. To you experts, open, closed, semi-open, Indian, Dragon, etc. have meaning that is lost on beginners (or idiots like me who don't have a lot of time for chess study). Open closed semi open are terms used to describe the pawn structure in the centre of the...

trying to remember who wrote this set of books by Daniel Neill
Hi all, I'm trying to remember, the books I learned chess from back in the 80's as a teen was a set of 6 blue books published in England. They were relatively thin paperbacks. Each had a big black digit (1...6) on the front with a chess piece silhouette (pawn...king). There was one on the rules, one on strategy, one on openings, one on tactics, one on the endgame, and one other. Can anyone...

For those looking for a set... by Tyler Eaves
I was recently in the market for a set (prior to this point I have played on computer "boards" only. While software certainly has it's place, I always found it rather lacking for trying out ideas from books, etc. It just lacked a tactile "something" such that I spent more time fooling with the interface. I did a bit of shopping around online to find a nice, but also (relatively) inexpensive set....
