Lapshun's Complaint by
Sam Sloan
Lapshun's Complaint
Yury Lapshun is one of the top scholastic coaches in the US. Lapshun
is himself an International Master and near grandmaster strength
player who played in the last US Championship. Many of his young
students have performed well in the national championships and in the
World Youth Championships. As one of his rival chess coaches put it,
"Lapshun is the best".
Now, however,...

Chess in/around Claremont, CA by
TR
My son is narrowing down his college choices. He's got some great
options (admitted at Caltech, Harvey Mudd, Columbia, Northwestern,
Washington University) and chess is not going to be the *determining*
factor, but it's certainly not irrelevant.
Despite what Harvey Mudd's web site
(http://www.hmc.edu/admin/admission/hmclub.html) says, we've learned
that there is no chess club there, and...

(OT) Apocryphal Quotation by

This post is written out of a scholarly interest in a well-known 'quotation'.
In the RGCM thread, 'Civility' (27 April 2003), Jerome Bibuld wrote:
"Although you may be a United Statesian, you seem to forget that, in
Uhmuhrikka, when we hear the word, 'culture', we reach for our guns...."
In response (27 April 2003), Simon ('Chapman billy') wrote:

Players saying "Check!" can it be stopped? by
joe mccarron
For the second time I have been playing chess at my club and there is
a small boy who is playing someone else but keeps blurting "check!"
"Check!" over and over. The other small child that he was playing
would immediately move leadign to another "check!" This must have
gone on for about 3 minutes. That may not seem long and I really
can't explain why it annoys me so much but I find it very...

from http://www.olimpbase.org
"OlimpBase has been designed to bring complete data for all the Chess
Olympiads played in the history. As you must have noticed so far only
1927-1974 period has been done. The rest is missing. We want to be ready for
October 14th, the Calvia take off. We are growing dynamically, but we are
still missing some data. We are working on Haifa 1976 and Malta 1980...

Is rating system killing chess?! by
Steve Waugh
Playing chess for win/fun seems to have gone out of the window.
Every top player seem to have concerned only about their ratings.
They are so much afraid of going down on ratings that they would
much prefer to settle with a draw against another top player.
I am tired of chess and chess icons.
I better move to poker now.

Story I heard about 2003 US Women's Playoff by
Sam Sloan
A chess master who is friends with the participants has just related
the following story:
At the conclusion of the 2003 US Chess Championship, three women were
tied for the woman's prize. They were Irina Krush, Jennifer Shahade
and Anna Hahn.
All three of them are friends. Therefore, since both Irina Krush and
Jennifer Shahade had previously won the US Woman's Championship, they
decided to give...

Endgame Study by
Ian Hurley
Everywhere I turn, I see recommendations to study the endgame. I am a club
player, and I have no doubt that studying the endgame will improve my
overall game, but I'm not clear on exactly HOW to study the endgame. Are we
talking about mate-in-2 puzzles? Or general principles? Are master endgames
too subtle for club players to learn from? Or should we just buy a few
endgame books?
I know the...

Computer Endgame Training? by
Mike Cox
Are there any software products that can train you in chess? I hate
learning with books because it takes time to set up the board, and
then you have to read the notation.
I would much rather have an interactive software program to instruct
me. Does one exist? Which one is the best. I am intrested in
learning and training in the endgame, but a program that does more
would be even better.

Misidentification of openings in Chess Life by
Miriling
For the fifth straight issue, the Chess Life editor has allowed some openings
and some subtitled variations to be misidentified. The April 2004 issue of CL
contains about 45 games, several of which are not correctly named. Among them
are
LaCombe-Yamada (page 10), identified as a Vienna Game, but in reality it's a
Vienna Gambit . There's a difference.
Shabalov-Gallegos (page 20) is identified as a...

Chess Cafe and Pakistan Chess Player
I looked at the Chess Cafe web site, http://www.chesscafe.com/ , after
several months. Some years ago, it was my favourite site. But, many things
have changed, some columnists have gone, some news have come. My opinion is
that site is now worse than ever before. If somebody who has never read
texts on this site opens it, he will be...

Lev Khariton: Korchnoi - professional rights or political convictions? by

Lev Khariton: Korchnoi - professional rights or political convictions?
I remember how I was rooting for Korchnoi when he was playing his
matches with Karpov in 1974, 1978 and 1981. I was not alone; most of
my friends in the Soviet Union, most of the people sick and tired of
the communist rule and ideology wished Viktor the Terrible success in
his struggle against Karpov who represented the...

Six for Sex, early 1970s movie by

Six for Sex, early 1970s movie
Has anybody ever seen, heard of or know where to obtain an early 1970s
porn movie entitled "Six for Sex"?
Talk about a low budget film, this was a no budget film. It was shot
in a seedy theatre in New York City on the East side of Eighth Avenue
between 42 and 45th streets on the second floor. The actors and
actresses were paid $60 each to appear in this movie....

Chess problems & studies with Chinese line pieces by
Daniel VanArsdale
Yesterday I uploaded "Chess with Chinese Line Pieces" at:
http://www.silcom.com/~barnowl/chess-clp.htm
This contains several new problems and a couple
endgame studies, all using one or more of the Pao
(Cannon), Vao and Leo. These "Chinese" pieces and
some simple chess problem terminology are defined
in the text. There is also a link to the solutions,
and to a Lewis Carroll parody that contains...
